here is no why...

why did i pick smashing pumpkins' "today" for the new trailer song?

i debated it for a while. i did. but in the end, it seemed an inevitable match that a song that defined our chicago-based team would be this one.

for all the shit i give billy corgan, he is faithful to our city. he could have, at any point bailed, and found a new home in los angeles, as do many other artists, but he didn't. and countless have been his efforts in making our city more progressive in the arts, especially in music. he has supported countless local acts and has repeatedly paid homage to our city.

therefore, as a chicago-based team who has refused to relocate out west where the current wushu haven is found, we seem to identify with these same qualities. we believe that our city has the potential to be hotspot for great wushu. we believe that chicago can, indeed, be known for great wushu. we believe it isn't necessary to move out west or play into the political games surrounding much of today's wushu in america. and we believe we can, without a doubt, make it through our earnest and undying efforts. granted, we must travel to the other side of the planet to train with our coach, but this is a far better choice than selling out.

not to say that all people who relocate are sell-outs, but just that it's harder to stay and battle the odds than it is to abandon ship and go where things are easier. i feel good about the choice to keep chicago as our home-base, and i feel good about choosing "today" as our song for 2006. we'll see how it works out this year. billy, bring me luck!

another note about the new trailer is the chimney sweep. debbie dove, our dear friend, gave it to me for luck in 2005. debbie is a super impressive lady who has been battling cancer for three years. toward the end of 2005, debbie almost gave up. she was hospitalized, and the doctors recommended she be put into hospice. but right before xmas, she made it known that she would continue to fight the cancer with all she had. and now she is back home, a little weak, but much better than last month. debbie is such an inspiration and a true sign of what courage and strength really are. needless to say that this chimney sweep has come to symbolize so much for me, and also for the rest of the team. thanks, debbie!
