My thoughts are ...
Wow... way to burn bridges - at least in the audience's mind anyway. But, I watched NashCon on video the other day and was VERY interested in the spoilery comment.[Spoiler for future ep(click to open)] A participant asked about Chuck's appearance this season (Which Rob had told them, pretty much) and Jared saying that ep 20 was his favorite of the whole series, possibly in relation to that. The appearance of Chuck would change Sam and Dean's chances a bit, I'm thinking... I'm going to have to process this episode more before I try to rate it in my mind. There were several themes, I guess - the parallel between the couple and Sam/Dean; how natural it is to go to any lengths to save the person you love, and how your life is never the same after you lose someone you love. Another was of course that next time either of them dies, Billy will at least try to make sure that they don't come back. There is a little matter of the fact that she can't really stop them from coming back if their body can be revived. Interesting parallel also between how Sam didn't have any answers as to how to find Cas in the beginning, and Dean didn't have any answers as to how Sam was going to "save the world" when he was talking to Billy.
I'm putting bigger versions of the photos in this time becaues there aren't as many and, I'm putting them in for aesthetic value and not to tell the story ;)
There wasn't much of a monster hunt storyline . There was a bit of back and forth between Sam and Dean 48 hours ago and now. The only thing that made the flashbacks worthwhile was Sam's constant insistance on trying to put a good face on the hunt (and the actual result). As with last episode, Dean is very reluctant to go on a hunt. They can ask someone else to do it. But he goes because Sam insists.
He's grumpy the whole time - from the interrogating at the bar, to checking out the cabin in the woods. I like that little bit about "unless you want to interrogate the trees" when they run out of people to talk to LOL Sam's insistance that going out into the park would be like camping was a very lame excuse (especially since they hate camping). We never get to actually see how they found the werewolves but from what the bartender said, she sent them to the other werewolves and told them they were coming - they were supposed to be "red meat" and easy prey.
So going back to the beginning, they kill all the werewolves, but not before Sam gets shot. And Dean knows there are two people hanging there and the guy is like let us down, my girl is hurt! but Dean takes the bullet out first. I'd argue that that was probably priority at that point. The couple was not shot or bleeding overly. Once he's got the bullet out though, he goes over and takes them down so the guy, Corvan can take care of his girl, Michelle. (I'm not quite sure but I think they were married - and this was their honeymoon.)
Dean's like, stay with Sam while I go out and get an ambulance, but then they find out that there are more werewolves. And at Corvan and Sam's insistence they all go out together.
They walk to what looks like a ranger 's cabin, Dean gets out some lamps and looks around for a phone or radio but he can't find anything. Then Corvan suggests that they should leave Sam because he would just slow them down and Michelle needed to see a doctor right away. Dean starts getting a bit violent, pushing Corvan back and telling him that they were going to carry Sam. He was going to make a litter. Sam keeps insisting that Corvan is right. They should go, but that naturally doesn't change Dean's mind.
The scene of Dean outside trying to get a litter here was quite touching. I think it was raining a bit and that part where he attacks the tree and stands there for a moment trying to calm down was quite touching. But while Dean is taking his emotions out on the trees outside, Corvan comes up to Sam and tells him that Dean won't leave as long as Sam is alive and he has to do this - and tries to choke Sam.
Now Corvan, as Michelle said later, is not really a killer. You can tell he doesn't know anything about choking someone Well, now that I look back, anyway LOL It does seem too simple. I have read that a person can just lose consciousness and it just looks like they are dead. I did have hope even as I watched the first time that he was just pretending to be dead, until Corvan looked for a pulse and couldn't find it.
To all purposes though, Sam looks dead, and even though Dean just wants to stay there and fight off the werewolves until he dies too, Corvan persuades him to take them to safety first. We can see the tears in Dean's eyes even as he's being pursuaded, but as he goes out the door, we see a small tear fall. So telling Sam he's going to come back for him, he takes the couple to the clearing, stops the sheriff's car, tells him to take the couple to safety and go back to Sam.
I like the image here where Corvan is explaining how he killed Sam to save them.
The sheriff doesn't let him, which actually made me suspect that he was also a werewolf, but it turns out he's just a dick. I don't know what exactly Dean was shot with, but it seemed like an electric shock. Dean is taken to the hospital. Michelle comes over and she's feeling bad because she knows her husband(?) killed Sam.
She expresses her condolences but the "I'm sorry" means a bit more than that aye? Then she says something about how death is not the end and Dean remembers Billy. So, like he did to talk to Death before, he takes a bunch of pills and "dies."
First of all, very interesting that he'd think he had a chance with the Billy knowing what she had said to Sam. Also I was thinking gah... Romeo and Juliette, as Dean tried to poison himself thinking Sam was dead and while he's trying to "kill himself," Sam wakes up. And kills both of the other werewolves.
It was a tad unreal to see Sam kill two werewolves on his own while he dripped blood all over the place. Although it was of course a surprise attack, since he would never have been able to fight them face on.
Billy totally toys with Dean, not telling him that Sam wasn't dead until later, and pretending that his death was a sure thing.
And here we again have confirmation - "The answer will always be no."
I have to ask, since they had a scene with Tessa at the beginning, did the angels fix it so the dead could go to heaven and hell? I guess they did aye? We never heard anything about it, and don't know what happened to Kevin... They are really doing a messy job with that for the past two seasons. As soon as Dean comes to, he wants to go find Sam and asks for a car but the sheriff cuffs him and tells him he is under arrest. He tells the doctor to sedate him! What a dick!
He's already called one of his own to check out the situation at the cabin, but the officer/ranger is already dead and he still doesn't find the emergency in the situation. Michelle though, knows how Dean has to save Sam if he is alive. She cuts him free.
And then we have the phone call from Sam. Sam tries to ask Dean if Corvan is with him so he can warn Dean that he's a werewolf, but the signal is not good enough.
Dean goes back into the hospital for some reason anyway. Maybe he heard a bit of what Sam was saying. While that's happening, Corvan finds out that he is turning into a werewolf and kills the poor doctor and the stupid police officer and is just about to kill Dean (by choking him! REALLY?!) when Sam comes and shoots him from behind.
DEAN: It took you long enough OK so either his wound was not serious at all or this guy is superman. REALLY?! This is the part I have the most trouble with. Just the fact that Sam seems pretty bad but kills the two vampires and comes to the hospital by car and shoots Corvan too.. and thhen all he needs is some stitches and he's good to go. So... maybe it wasn't such a serious wound afterall? BUT all that blood... ?
MICHELLE: Corvan wasn't a killer. He did it for me. DEAN: Michelle, this is going to be very hard. But you will be ok. Eventually you'll be back to normal MICHELLE: No, I won't. They said I could leave, an hour ago. But where am I even supposed to go? After everything we survived together, I watched the man I love die. There's no normal after that.
And Dean knows that - that's why he keeps saving Sam right?
SAM: How is she? DEAN: She's strong. She'll be alright. Those stitches going to hold? SAM: Yeah. Professional grade. Couple days of antibiotics and some bed rest and I'm back to normal.
Interesting comparison on "back to normal." One of course being on the inside, while the other is on the outside. And you can be back to normal on the outside and never go back to the person you were on the inside.
Dean is still trying to get over the heart attack he had over Sam's "death." He sighs as he starts up the engine. Sam's curious what Dean tried to do when he thought Sam was dead, but Dean can't tell him. I'm sure there are several reasons for that, but one of them is obviously the fear brought on by Billy's answer.
The ep was touching and I did enjoy Dean in a panic over Sam but there were quite a few bits I wasn't very excited about. I'll say "good" for now.
