I had a very hard time watching this episode. I felt the scenes between Jack and Jamie could have been shorter, I would have preferred more focus on Claire and Brother Anselm as that is quite important in the book and how Claire grows as a person, Also more scenes with delirious Jamie.
I didn't care for Jamie branding himself, I got what they were trying to do, but I felt BJR should have done it.
I also felt the scene where Jamie finally tells Claire how BJR broke him could have used some voice over when we follow Jamie's thoughts back to the prison.
The whole healing part felt rushed to me, I really missed the scene from the book where Claire catches him staring at his hand thinking she's not done enough, while he's just so thankful to still have a functioning hand.
I liked the last scene on the boat but felt the script could have used another rewrite to make it flow better.
Despite all this I thought the episode was well done when I take a step back and put on my AU glasses. I just keep wishing they'd cut down on the prison scenes, but at the same time I see that it was necessary to show the full brutality of what Jamie went through.
I was actually surprised at how tame the prison scenes were. I'm pretty sure that in the book Jack actually whipped Jamie and then would rub the oil on them to ease the pain and then would hurt him again (like Dean in hell - except Jack Randall was kind when he tended the wounds :P). That actually made more sense to me than what they showed in the ep. I really wasn't convinced that he was "broken." They didn't have to show all the scenes, they could have just shown the new scars on his back, and they certainly didn't have to show all they did either but I wished they had given more of an overall impression.
I agree completely about all those other scenes you mentioned.
I see your point. I rewatched the last two episodes with my friend this weekend, and somehow it flowed better this time. There's something about leaving the expectation from the books behind. She found the prison scenes very hard to watch and hid behind her pillow for most of the episode.
