Poll Outlander 1-16 To Ransom a Man's Soul
Here are my thoughts -

First off, I was relieved that the first scene seemed to skip over all the pain and gore of the fingers being broken.  That, I didn't want to see.  But, I had hoped for more of a pain/kindness/pain/kindness sort of pattern so was a bit disappointed in these scenes overall.  I didn't particularly like the branding scene - how Jack made Jamie do it himself.  Not because it was cruel (I don't mind cruel if it tells a story) - just because the scene just didn't seem right.

I like how Jamie asked Jack to kill him as promised, and Jack takes up the knife to do just that but is bothered by the noise outside.  The cow scene was excellent.  I loved watching those Scotts sneak in and throw Jamie over their shoulder and sneak out through the door that Claire had left open.

The scene in the chapel was ok - I did tear up a bit as Claire did.  But I didn't particularly like or understand Claire wanting to confind in this particular monk.  I didn't feel that they set this up well enough.

These shots of Jamie  I thought were quite beautiful.

Sam... is a god in these scenes.  Beautiful :P
The love scene was pretty well done, also, I thought.

This shot of Black Jack was interesting too.  He looks cute and vulnerable :P

I did tear up in this scene as well, where Claire tells Jamie that them being together is the only reason she can find for the things that have happened to her -- I guess destiny - and that she would die if he died.
There were things about the scene I was not happy about.  I was hoping for a bit more acting on Claire's part and a bit more delirium on Jamie's at the beginning.

I don't know... this last scene on the boat was ok.  It was weird to see Claire throwing up because I didn't expect it, but interesting they tied in the pregnancy that way.  Jamie obviously was not himself yet but Claire asking him if they were going to be ok and Jamie talking about changing the future was not the best of scenes for me - just the matter of the lines and delivery I think.

All in all, I'd rate it OK.  I tried to write Good, but I couldn't.  Maybe on a rewatch.

Book talk -
This episode really shows how they are hurrying throught stuff and missing a lot of good scenes.  I would have appreciated more care on the Jack/Jamie scenes, more talks between Claire and the monk (Brother Anselm preferably), more darkness when Claire "goes into the darkness" to bring Jamie out, Jamie sicker and in delirium etc.  More Claire frustrated trying to get Jamie to care.  I missed the hotspring scene where Claire becomes pregnant.  I also missed the scene where Jamie thanks Claire for fixing his hand.  That was a very emotional scene.
