So I've been thinking..
I have a theory on the special kids - this came to me as I was just going to attempt to take a nap today after work and packing to move.
We know the demon is building an army. this is true.
However we do not know that army is all special kids.
What if his plans for Sammy and all those like him are to use them until he's done and then toss them away?
ie, Max is dead because he achieved his goal - killing his family (for some reason we may find out later); and bringing Sam closer to finding out his powers.
ie, Andy's brother is dead because his *job* was to inform Andy about the demon and basically destroy his life to allow the demon to get to him. Andy's job isn't over yet, so he's still alive and while the girl he was interested in is alive; she won't go near him.
Ava is still alive (but we think in the clutches of the demon) because her job is half done. She was given the visions to save Sammy, and then grabbed by the demon. But she'll be back.
Sammy's "job" isn't known yet, and with Dean as the unknown factor in this, the demon isn't even sure Sammy can complete it, hence the tests (Nightmare; Croataon).
The Demon is just using these kids and then killing them or getting them killed when he's done. We just don't know what he ultimately wants Sammy for or Sammy to do before he tosses him away as well.
