I've finally planted out the flowers that were growing on the kitchen windowsill and were past their best. They can come up again next spring, I hope. I also pulled up what I thought was crab grass. On closer inspection, I think it is spilled wheat from the bird table. I have dark tulips with yellow tips to the petals, all brand shiny and new this week - planted before Yule. Growing bulbs is infinitely rewarding. You plant them, and flowers happen. And then flowers happen again the next year without any extra work. It's like magic.

I've been told by Squire that all of this land was a well-established allotment before the houses were built. That means that there's good soil under there somewhere. I may put a square foot garden up against the back fence.
