Venice Photo Journal Chapter 2

Apr 18, 2011 19:58

Gosh, has it really been a week since I posted last?  It's partly because my desktop computer is really slow these days and posting pictures can become very tedious very fast.  I should have poured a glass of wine before starting this post so I'd be more mellow, but I will soldier on regardless.

Here's one of my brother and I, along the Grand Canal before dinner one night.  We don't have many photos together, so I'm glad we took the time for this one.  Do you see why no one would mistake us for twins?  We barely look related.

This is one of my favorite memories from the trip.  One evening we were having stroll after dinner, and this tiny perfect child came zooming along on a three wheel scooter.  She was wearing a black felt coat and white tights and a tiny black beret and she looked to be about four years old and as perfect as a living doll.  We began seeing her every day, so I think she must have lived near our apartment.  On the last day I looked out the window and saw her coming with her mother and the scooter, so I grabbed my camera.  Just then someone called out, "Claudia!" from one of the windows and she stopped and waved (her mother was just outside the shot).  I don't really know why this whole scene charmed me so much, but it did indeed.

Empty tables in St. Mark's Square.

This doesn't even begin to capture the true colors.  I love that they left these lights on at night.

My brother robbing the Calvin Klein manequins.  "Reach for the sky!"

This came out much more dark and sinister looking than it truly was.  It was just a group of friends having a nice time at a pub.

We never did figure out what this store was, and we walked past it several times a day.

Touristy, but this was one of my favorite window displays.  Just down from the Rialto Bridge.

Masks.  Everywhere the masks.  This was just a few weeks after Carnivale and there was still confettii in every crack of pavement.  In fact, I just noticed you can see some at the bottom of the picture reflected in the window glass.  Along with my shoes.

The sun looks like its holding up the crane.

Two of my favorite photos.  I love the simplicity and utility of what it must take to get around a city built on the water.

Now tell me you don't hear this lion talking like the Cowardly Lion from "The Wizard of Oz."  "Oh do go on!  She was wearing plaid AND stripes?  You don't say!"

One morning I went for a walk before breakfast, taking care not to get totally turned around and lost (a distinct possibility).  I walked out onto a pier, and saw the Rialto Bridge not far away and I had it all to myself in the pink dawn.  I love this city!
