It had been many years and the boy had heard the story so many different ways. Once, a friend of his had said, “If you don’t look for it, it will come.” Another time, a friend told him, “It will come when you least expect it.” More sayings came after that: “good things come to those who wait,” “there is someone out there for everyone.” But as the years went by and relationships fell apart, the boy began to have his doubts. He would date girls, but nothing ever clicked the right way. It always felt like he was putting too much in and not getting anything back. Pretty soon he kept trying to tell himself that he wanted a relationship and that he wanted love, but the truth was that he wanted anything other than that.
Yes, the boy loved to cuddle, he loved kisses, and he loved the energy that love provided and the excitement. But overall love was just a game that he knew he could not win at. Finally, after putting almost all of his energy into a relationship and getting tossed away because “it just didn’t work,” he decided to quit. Sure, he dated a few girls for a week’s time, but the trust, hope, and desire for love was gone. Deserting one of his most treasured feelings, he gave up on it.
The thoughts he once relied on turned into mental slaps across the face every time he saw a girl that he was even the slightest bit interested in. Eventually he had achieved loneliness and discovered more about himself than he ever could have imagined; however, he still felt incomplete.
The holes in his heart were still empty. Every weekend, he would fill those holes with alcohol and friendships, but nothing seemed to be enough. He was plagued by thoughts of the future and wanting to someday have a family. And even though he had completely given up on relationships, he kept telling himself that something was missing. But instead of giving up on being single and doing all the things he used to do to get women, the boy decided to be himself.
In this way, it would be impossible to find a girl; however, he felt confident that when the right girl came along, everything would make sense.
