I read
this article today about the uproar Buddhists in Sri Lanka are causing over Akon's "Sexy Girl" video. There are reports of violence, "we hate Akon" signs, etc... Typical behavior for your average monotheistic religion but you know, I expected more from Buddhists. This kind of behavior is actually distinctly un-Buddhist.
It actually made me quite sad. You would think that being Buddhist, they would have expressed their displeasure in less obligatory and bombastic ways. I always thought that Buddhism was the one religion in which its members were beyond such immature and narrow minded behavior, that instead they were more capable than other groups of religions, even at their most radical, of expressing their opinions in calm and reasonable ways. Isn't the entire tenant of Buddhist based upon understanding, love, and pacifism? That is certainly not what I can say about most other religions. I mean if you look at the bible or the koran it's full of all sorts of contradictory we smite you but love you messages.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is no religion out there that is free from violent, overly sensitive, I-take-myself-too-seriously types. Instead we as humans have the ability to corrupt pretty much every good idea that has ever been conceived by people with otherwise good intentions.
All I know is that reading this article made me kind of disappointed.
