Last night I used my oven's broil setting to cook really fabulous steaks. I was fascinated by the cooking capacity of this previously unexplored oven setting. The last time I used the broil setting was when I was about 10 years old. A misguided 4H leader thought it would be a good idea to teach us how to make toast in the oven.
This was not, however, the most exciting 4H activity that involved fire. Across the street from the 4H leader's house there was a house full of guys who enjoyed working on demolition derby cars. One day we had a 4H meeting on fire safety (a follow-up, I suppose, to the toast incident.) We kids were all busily ignoring the 4H leader who frequently tried to teach us useless things like how to make toast and how to check smoke detectors, when suddenly there was an explosion across the street, clearly visible through the opened front door. Our leader instructed us all to stay put while she ran to call the fire department. As soon as she left the room we all ran outside to see how close we could get to the flames before our eyelashes began to singe.
It turned out that the guys working on the car had forgotten to make sure the gas tank was empty before attempting to remove the gas tank with a blow torch.
