Yoga studio research, fall 2008

(For my own reference, feel free to skip)

Inner Fire Yoga (Yoga on Main) (hatha)
4363 Main Street, Manayunk

Teacher training:
200-hour. I think it's a four-month program. Pluses are that it's closest to home; minuses that it's a hatha-focused program. Need to meet the instructors, take a class, see what they're like, but I'm thinking no. Cost: $2250.

Also offer 500-hour program (too big for me) and other neat things like a 95-hour prenatal program that would be awesome to do.

Classes:
try to catch an Inner Fire class with Shiva Das. Thu 7-8:30.
approx 15 min drive from my place.
Class pass: 7-class, 3 mo, $84.

Wake Up Yoga (vinyasa)
2329 Parrish Street (3 blocks N of Fairmount Ave, NW corner at Bucknell), fairmount/art museum area

Teacher training:
250-hour, six month program (Sept-Apr). Every Wednesday, every other Fri/Sat, assorted Sundays.
Cost: $2700 if paid in full in advance ($2900 total if using payment plan). Includes unlimited classes. (Of course this is the one I'm really excited about, the one that's $500 more than the others. I have such a feeling about it, though.)

They have other interesting workshops too--the female pelvic floor one looked cool, and the prenatal with your partner one (for myself in a few years).

Classes:
look for classes with Corina and Jill M. Mon Tue Wed 5:45, Sat 10:00.
I could walk here from work in maybe half an hour, or it's about a 20-25 min drive. If going to a 5:45 class I'd have to walk it, then train home. Meh.
Class pass: 5-class card, 3 mo, $65. 10-class card, 4 mo, $120.

Dhyana Yoga (ashtanga-based vinyasa, kundalini)
Locations:
Rittenhouse Square (1611 Walnut, 4th Floor, above the American Apparel Store, next to Wok Restaurant)
Old City (68 N. 2nd Street (near Arch), Look for a bay window with a the big orange DY logo)

Teacher training:
200-hour, four-month program this fall: 2-3 weekends a month (1-7PM), plus 20 classes, a three-hour workshop, 10 homework hours, 10 service hours. (Also offer a five-week accelerated program in Jan--would be AWESOME to do but completely impractical with my current job, so file away for future reference.)
Cost: $2250, $250 deposit, $100 discount for full payment in advance.

Also have interesting 50-hour workshops on flow, tantra, kundalini, to keep in mind for later.

Classes:
Look for classes with Dhyana or Alex. Mon-Tue 6:15 in Rittenhouse (or Thu long lunch 12-1:30), Wed 6:00, Thu 7:15 in Old City (good if it's nice out and I don't mind walking).
Cons of taking classes here: staying late at work, late train ride home.
Class passes: New student unlimited $30 for two weeks, 5-class card, 6 mo, $65.

-----

These are the Philly options. There's another one in West Philly but that just looks inconvenient. Yoga Alliance also lists some schools in Allentown/Bethlehem (Yoga Loft looks best), New Hope (both look good), and Havertown/Ardmore/Wayne (Main Line looks best of these), so if we end up moving farther north or west of the city I will still have options.

I think I'm going to start my physical research next month. I'm really depressed and down right now, and yoga would help with that, but I just can't commit to doing anything else at all in October. I just cannot manage to wrap my head around everything that October is requiring of me--I can't add anything else. November will be time enough.
