I just got a rejection from Calyx--it was a very nice rejection, personalized and recommending that I "foster more universal connections in the themes" of my poems, whatever that means, but the stuff I sent them wasn't that great anyway and that's not why I'm posting. I'm posting because Calyx has a
yearly contest, and this year it is being judged by URSULA K. LE GUIN. Who is pretty much my very favorite writer. The guidelines specify not to send simultaneous submissions, which sucks because most of my best stuff is out in the world right now. But the postmark deadline is May 31, so I have a little time. I've been getting flurries of rejections lately--I'm guessing a lot of journals want to get things done before the end of the spring semester--so hopefully I'll keep getting news and will be able to free up some good stuff before the end of May. It would be well worth the $15 fee and worth the five months' wait for a chance to have Ursula Le Guin read my work. I have never been so excited about a contest before.
