golf balls!

According to my Snapple cap, Americans spend $630 MILLION per year... on golf balls. GOLF BALLS. I'm proud to say that I do not contribute to this total, except for maybe once when I couldn't think of anything else to get my dad for Father's Day. But really, America, $630 million on golf balls? Don't we have anything better to spend our ( Read more... )

Hmm, assuming 1% of the US population of 301,000,000 golfs, that comes to $210 per golf-player per year.

The list of stupid stuff I spend $210 (or more) on per year is way too long for comfort . . .

But we're just talking about balls here! The average golfer cannot possibly need $210 worth of golf balls per year. They cost like $6 a pack at the Walmart. Even the designer balls--what, like $20 a pack? Even if you're buying the designer balls, it's not like using them once means you can't use them again! (Water traps aside, of course.)

If Americans spend that much money on golf balls alone, can you imagine how much good could be done for the world if we eliminated a sport--any single sport--for one year and gave the usual sport-related funds to charity instead? Not that I expect any sports elimination to occur. It's just a mind boggling thing to imagine.

Hey, guys take their balls seriously.

In truth, while I know little about golf, I would guess that gold balls don't last all that long, given that their purpose is to be hit really hard by metal sticks. (I also suspect golf players replace them even earlier than necessary, out of the belief that a new ball will fly further, but, meh.)

If you're a bad golfer, you'll lose a lot of golf balls. But, if you're a smart golf-ball purchaser, then you'll search through the rough for other people's golf balls.
