say no to cherokee redevelopment plan

so, there are these little flyers up along haddon avenue that say "cherokee redevelopment plan" with a "no" symbol around it... and i always thought it meant something like "say no to redeveloping lands in nj that belong to the cherokee"... (i thought it was only the powhatan who lived near here)

so i did a search on "cherokee redevelopment nj" and it turns out cherokee is a land development firm based in raleigh nc. but the problem is that although they have great vision for environmentalism and reducing sprawl, their vision is near-sighted. for example, there is a bald eagle's nest on an island in the delaware that is currently owned by citgo. and the amazing thing is that even citgo thinks cherokee's ideas of putting some homes, a conference center and a golf course on the island is a bad idea. they want it to be turned into a sanctuary. the other part of the redevelopment plan is that they are going to be building $250,000 homes in pennsauken. now, ok... that might be a good idea for folks who work in philly and don't mind taking 2 trains to get to work... but the redevelopment would be pushing existing residents out. i'm assuming their redevelopment plan doesn't include a wide variety of home types (including apartments) i'm afraid each house will look exactly the same. cookie cutter. without any kind of uniqueness or character of their own. that might be okay, because technically, pennsauken IS a suburb, but it seems city-like enough to me to deserve character. it just seems like they're building houses... not communities.

a good thing came from this little reasearch project of mine.... now i know which gas company i would like to purchase gas from now. :-)

i am a hippie, actual content, my landscape architecture side
