I broke my tooth this morning. I had a root canal done while Jason was deployed, so 2 years ago? After that and another root canal my insurance was maxed out and I couldn't afford the crown. Then life went on and I was pregnant and then I moved and then I forgot and now the tooth is broken. I do have to say the temporary filling has not broken, ( Read more... )

Oh that happened to me! I had a root canal before I was 18 so they wouldn't let me get a crown, and the doctor only filled the tooth half way. One night I was eating and my tooth just cracked in half and broke off. It's not like I was eating rocks or anything, I just bit down and had to spit out a tooth. It sucked. It also sucks that dental work is so damn expensive! I don't remember what the cost of my crown was. I know my root canal was $1700 and we didn't have insurance at the time...my grandma paid for it ( ... )

I think my crown was $700 or something, I have to pay roughly $350 out of pocket. Which when you don't have an income... :( My mom is going to pay half, and hopefully Jason has one more paycheck so I can pay the other half without breaking the bank too bad.

We do get housing as active duty, but November is his "release" date, and he had to pay for some parts of his uniform that were missing and that took a good chunk of our paycheck. The GI bill does give a living stipend if you are going full time, Jason still has to apply for that, and it probably wont start until the semester starts anyway. He just did the first part of his physical and then he can apply for disability through the VA. I am hopeful he will get a decent amount, I feel like everyone knows someone who gets "so much money" every month, and I am kind of hoping we will be one of those! :P

I am so glad people don't use machines anymore. My parents still have one though!

Tell me about it. We have income but no insurance and I just forked over $195 at the doc and will need almost $400 in lab work this week, and that's just the beginning. Money makes me anxious.

My sister always told me that her and her husband will be getting their "housing allowance" for the rest of their lives, which is $1000/month. Maybe they're just getting their living stipend because he is going to school. She is under the impression though that they will get $1000/month forever. I dunno. Her husband also got disability because he hurt his knee during basic training. I think he got like $14,000 for that. He's not working though and they still manage to be struggling.

I'm assuming by what you have posted that Jason got injured in the military? I don't remember you writing about that (maybe you didn't)...what happened? From what I knew you had to be pretty badly injured to get a purple heart, is he alright?

So I don't know exactly how it all works, but from my understanding the military only offers disability or retirement pay if you are no longer active duty, not a housing allowance. If he is getting a housing allowance, it is probably just from the GI Bill living stipend.

Yes, he was in a truck that was hit with RPG and was knocked unconscious (two of the guys in the truck lost a leg each). Basically they were blown up. (the beginning of Iron Man, is a good way to describe what happened) So he suffered a traumatic brain injury, not to mention all the other symptoms of going to war. He definitely has some PTSD going on and has a lot of trouble sleeping, and a lot of back pain. So I guess he is alright, but not as alright has he would have been not deploying, if that makes sense.

See, that is what I would have assumed about the housing thing. Her husband was in the military for 4 years. He hurt his knee in basic, he hit it on something I guess, but didn't tell anybody about it because he wanted the money from deployment and he was afraid if he said he got hurt that they wouldn't let him deploy. So he deployed, and then decided he didn't want to stay in the military so he decided to tell them then that he was hurt and needed to leave. They prescribe him all kinds of pain killers and he claims he is "too injured" to work, yet you see him bouncing all over the place, running and jumping like a little kid. They also prescribe him antidepressants and the like, which he receives but doesn't actually take them. What he does with them...I don't know. He says he has PTSD and has some sort of attacks when he hears gunshots or loud noises that remind him of gunshots, but he will play fighting games and actually took my sister to a shooting range ( ... )

I mean we have finished our claim with the VA yet but I have never heard of housing on top of disability.
Some people man. I wish they would understand that being shady makes it harder for people who really need it to get it.
I know that loud sudden noises bother Jason and make him irritable but he does still play fighting games. Maybe because they know it is happening it doesn't bother them?

I can't imagine putting my life on the line for some extra money. I mean it is a decent amount but not enough in my opinion to potentially trade for my life.

Well and also, people like that make people like me disrespect the military. I'm sorry, but I cannot respect my sister's husband when he goes on rants about how much he hates this country and hates the military, but then says he will milk them for all they've got. Yes, he has said that. And I know there are many other people in the military who are like that or have children with some crazy sense of entitlement because their military daddy thinks it is necessary to buy them a BMW on their 18th birthday. I've seen more of the bad people from the military than I have the good and living in a military town just made me sick to be honest. Maybe because I knew more military wives who claimed they would have divorced their husbands a long time ago had it not been for the large sums of money the government gives military. Because life wouldn't be worth living without a new coach bag each Christmas, right? And the active duty men I have met have been by far the most disrespectful people I've ever met in my life. So I have really ( ... )

Oh geez, the type of people the military attracts is disgusting. Tag chasers and dependapotamus. It is so annoying when women wear their husband's rank too. Or when girlfriends think they deserve the same benefits as wives. Not all military are like that, but the ones who are are so obnoxious you can't miss them and they give everyone a bad name.

I agree, he shouldn't be accepting things to help him and then discarding it because he just wants a free ride.
