“Kara?” Caprica asked, “What are you thinking about?”
“How glad I am you don’t snore.”
“Oh, go on.”
“I am. Joan always looks so tired because Debbie snores.”
“You’re awful,” Caprica answered, but there wasn’t any bite to her words.
They were both quiet for a few minutes. Kara wondered if Caprica had fallen asleep when she heard her roommate whisper, “I miss Sam.”
No one talked about their husbands here. It was easier as a group if they pretended like nothing was wrong, like they weren’t all playing baseball because their men were fighting and dying overseas, and it was certainly frowned upon to talk about missing your husband aside from on birthdays and anniversaries. Everyone missed their husband. It was better to keep quiet.
It wasn’t as hard, during the day, when they were out running laps or tossing balls, or, even better, playing the game. It wasn’t so bad in the evening when they had etiquette class and dinner and the social hour in the common room. But you wondered in the dark.
“I know you do,” Kara whispered back. “I miss Lee, too.”
“I thought I’d get used to it,” Caprica admitted. “But I haven’t.”
Kara hadn’t either. “I know.” She was lousy at comforting people. “You know what I think about?”
Caprica sniffled. “How tan he must be?”
Kara laughed in surprise. She had mentioned that to Caprica when she got her last letter. “Other than that. I think about about how he must have made friends, and how they look out for each other, the way we do here.”
“That’s a nice thought,” Caprica acknowledged. “I hope they’ve made friends.”
“They have,” Kara said, snuggling into her pillow. “And they’ll spend the rest of their lives talking about their army and navy buddies from the war, just like our daddies.”
“Like we’ll be talking about each other?”
“Exactly like that.”
