There we go again

Don’t be so goddamn oblivious, Nick.

Cutter kept staring at the tiny slip of paper in his hand, the words written in an all too familiar handwriting. He had no idea what she meant. Nothing had been out of the ordinary lately, except maybe that for the first time in almost a decade he was happy again. He threw the note into the bin and followed Lester out of the ARC. He was really looking forward to a quiet evening at their shared flat.

Jenny was seeing someone. Cutter was rather proud of himself for noticing; maybe he wasn’t as oblivious as everyone thought. To be fair, though, Jenny was being rather obvious with her constantly flushed cheeks and distracted smiles. She was not only seeing someone, Cutter decided happily, Jenny Lewis was in love.

Something was up with the team. Abby was silent and less enthusiastic about the creatures, Connor was constantly blushing and couldn’t quite meet his eye like every time he tried hard not to blab out a secret, Sarah resigned for some mysterious reason, and Jenny outright avoided him - though that was not too strange, really, considering that he still called her Claudia more often than not. Old habits and all that.

***

Lester was drunk. It wasn’t easy to tell, he could hold his drink like no one Cutter knew (himself included and that was quite impressive indeed) but he had been around Lester long enough by now to notice the signs.

“Is everything ok, James?”

His concern only earned him a hiccupped “Don’t be so bloody nice”.

***

“We can’t tell him… not yet… not now.”

“How much longer do you want to wait, James, until the birth of our grandchildren?”

“What’s going on here?”

***

Cutter was drunk. It was almost comforting to be back in his tiny hole of misery of the last decade. Well… Lester at least apologized.
