The insanity can stop anytime now, please. I am terrified that the extreme cold is going to kill my car battery; it already struggles to start every time. This is the kind of cold that takes your breath away, that leaves you dazed the instant you step outside. After I left a friend's house last night (-10, again) I shivered uncontrollably the whole ride home. Despite the shivering, though, it was . . . really a beautiful drive. This is the cold that is too cold for snow, that seems too cold for wind, even: everything was deathly still and silent, not the slightest hint of movement or sound anywhere, the lights shining feebly on the deeply mounded snow. When the entire world is literally frozen, it's a supremely eerie feeling.
