Free Period (of seven days)

You flutter open your heavy eyelids to find yourself in the hospital room. You must have fainted at home again - you think. The door creaks open and both of your parents walk in. They look at your pale face with so much worry in their orbs and you feel guilty for making them. School - you think, again. Before you can even speak, your mum rejects your wish firmly. You silent yourself after that and drift off to sleep. Few hours later, you’re up again; not feeling any better. But you know, you have to be strong - for your parents, for yourself. You have to win this war - as people say. You have to hang on though you feel awfully tired that you feel like giving up any minute to let everything come to an end. You find no strength to think of anything anymore so you just lay there - and stare into the white ceiling of the room while trying to get some much needed rest. Suddenly, you hear some sort of vibration. You look to your left to find your cellphone there, vibrating on the drawer. You sit up against the head board. Then, you reach out for it and flip it open. Looking at the caller ID, you figure you’ve expected this - it is free period in school now. “Hello?” you speak into the phone hoarsely. “What happened to your voice? Where are you? Are you okay?” is the reply from the other end. You know that he’s worried - yet again. “Sorry, I didn’t go to school today. I’m still a little ill so my mum asked me to stay in” you reply slowly. “Is it very bad?” his tone still the same. “A little high fever. That’s all. Don’t worry” “Feel better soon, alright?” and you just hum into the phone as a reply. “Maybe I should come visit you after school. Can I come?” He’s sincere, you know - but you still can’t let him. You’re not at home, no? You quickly made up an excuse. “No…” Suddenly, it hits you - the side effects of the cancer treatment that you’re undergoing. Your throat is in so much pain, as if there is a blade, knife slicing through it. So much unbearable pain that you started to cry into the phone. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” he sounds more and more worried than before. You try your best to finish what you were saying just now, “No…nothing…I’ll see…see you in…school…to…tomorrow…Bye” you instantly hang up. You bury yourself into the bed. The pain worsen - it won’t leave you alone. You catch a glimpse of your doctor and two nurses rushing your way through your teary eyes. Everything you are seeing is blur. The doctor injects some liquid into your left arm and the nurses - you have known far too long are there assuring that you’ll be fine.

You hope that this isn’t the end. You don’t want it to end now - not before you bid him farewell.
