It seems that whomever wrote this review never read the comics the show is based on. But then again, that might be a good thing, since hopefully only a smart portion of the viewers of this show will have done so either.
I watched it and I got to say, the show's pretty good, and in some ways, more directly emotional than he comic, though that probably has a lot to do with the medium.
Nope, I never read the comic it's based on and have no urge to. That medium doesn't hold my attention long enough to get through the 20+ pages most comics have let alone follow a series. I didn't even realize there was a comic until after I watched the episode and wrote the review. I watched the pilot with no prior knowledge other than it was about zombies.
I really don't think many people read comics or graphic novels. The chances of it having an audience will hinge more on whether people are interested in a zombie story than whether they were fans of the original story.
ah oops, mistook your review for something you found elsewhere (feeling stupid now*g*)
Thing is, this isn't your typical comic book. It's a very character oriented story, with an ongoing storyline that focuses on the people in it, rather than on the thrills of fighting zombies. You get a lot of moments with the characters doing little more than talking to one another. (in a way the episode was actually less talky than the comic, which doesn't happen very often)
It's one of those series that once you start reading, you can't bear to stop, because you just want to know what's going to happen, will they live, won't they, what effect will the events have on them. Who will go crazy, who will prevail, will the strangers they meet be friends or not and what effect will meeting them have on the group.
If the series is even half as good as the comic book, then I'll probably have a new series to watch every week. And I usually rarely if ever like anything to do with zombies.
