There was something in the air the night they landed in the US. Something that held Amy fascinated. It was one of those rare moments when she was alone and she didn’t feel so empty, that being just her didn’t mean she was missing a part of herself, like it had gone away suddenly and she didn’t know why. Still, the Doctor was good company, even on night like this.
She sat alone by a riverside basketball court and looked at the goals. In the distance she saw a man coming her way. He had a hood over his head, he was, sometimes, pounding a basketball against the ground and she could see the headphones all the way from here. In the dim light from the basketball court she noticed the shape of him. He looked good, a typical American with broad shoulders and a tall build. She smiled.
He looked up at her, more surprised than anything. “Hey,” he said, his voice a little scratchy and very surprised.
“Hi,” she said, waving a hand in the air.
He looked at her for a moment and then he squinted. “I’ve never seen you before,” he said, a statement more than a question.
“No, I would think not,” Amy responded.
“British, yes?”
She smiled. “Sure,” she nodded. He pulled the hood from his head and she saw a face that imprinted itself on the inside of her eyelids.
“Vacation?”
“Just very far from home,” she said, standing up from the bleachers.
“I can tell,” he said, looking her over. “I’m Lukas. Scott.”
“Amelia Pond.”
“Nickname?” he asked, taking a step closer to her.
“Amy. You?”
“Luke.”
They kept stepping closer, until they were a mere feet away from each other.
“How long are you here?” he asked, his eyes looking deeply into hers.
“Dunno.”
“Okay then,” he said. “That settles it then.”
And then he dropped the ball to the ground, took her by the arm and pulled her to him. She was so surprised she didn’t have too much time to react. But when he finally kissed her, the tension in the air so thick she could have cut it, she melted into him and for the first time in a while she didn’t feel so empty.
