THE CHARACTER
Character's name:
Hyūga Hinata (Western: Hinata Hyūga)Journal:
sunnyheiressSeries:
NarutoCanon Point: Chapter 488
Loss: Memories of Team Eight/Team Kurenai. Kiba, Shino and Kurenai were her first friends and heavily implied to be her only actual friends. More than that, they were the first people to believe in her and her abilities and helped her grow (somewhat) into her confidence. Without these memories, she doesn't entirely "get" what it means to be friends with someone, and she is lacking in the confidence she gained from them.
Species/Race: Human.
Morality: Hinata is, at her core, a pacifist. She hates fighting, conflict, arguments, anything of the sort and does her best to avoid them. Instead, she'll try to use her words and usually does so to a certain victorious degree. Usually she just manages to hit a nerve and continues on with revealing the truth of the other person about theirself to the point where they then attack her with an intent to kill. At which point, she can, will and does fight back. Or if not, then she does her best to agree and retreat.
However, she will rarely go after someone with an intent to kill. She doesn't hold grudges, prefers to fight fair, and due to Naruto's heavy influence on her, she doesn't entirely believe in killing people. However if she has no other choice, then she will. Because she does adhere to the status quo in such ways: she will follow most rules and laws without complaint, but she does rebel against the rules that are unjust or conflict with her own world view without hesitation and that are in her own way.
Basically, she is a go-with-the-flow pacifist until she is provoked into a situation that requires some messier handling.
On a different note... She is also power-hungry. To the same degree as characters like Sasuke. This is mainly because of the inferiority complex she had and still has (to a small degree) toward her younger sister. However, again due to Naruto's heavy influence over her, she has a firm mindset as to how to go about getting power and strength: the good old-fashioned way through the power of hard work and determination. Even though she admits she almost went about gaining power the wrong way when she was younger. So while she can understand how easily someone can succumb to the temptation of easy power, she also won't hold them in any high regard. That would even include (and sometimes does for even considering it) herself.
She also has skewed views on lying, cheating and stealing. Being able to properly cheat is apparently one of the tests of becoming a chūnin. As it shows that a ninja can discreetly gather information from their surroundings. Given that she had answers on that test (and then...passed it again two years later), she doesn't view cheating in a bad light when done for the right reasons. But, as mentioned above, if you are cheating in order to become stronger and such, then she...will not like you too much. On this note, given that the test right after it involved stealing a scroll from another team (and thereby possibly being a large factor in that team failing), she also has little issue about stealing when done for the right reasons/for the sake of a mission. Steal for any other reason, and she won't like you and will think you a bad person.
As a shy person and one lacking in self-confidence, Hinata has little issue with telling little white lies. Nor does she mind being told little white lies. She understands why it's done. But when the lies are big ones, she does mind. Even though, again, she understands why they would be told. Especially when a mission is involved. But she will still feel bad and will mind being lied to.
...She is very grey in morality.
Involvement: Someone would have to be threatening those she considers friends/is close to-be it through physical injury, attempted murder, and/or verbal threats-and she will get involved. More so if she's really close to them, or there is no one else around who is trying to help. Or if you know her and are on good terms with her, then ask and she will do her best to help.
"I" in TEAM: She's a team player. As a ninja in the world of Naruto and as a tracker, she's been trained to work in groups of 3 or more and mainly as the tracker/look-out/support. However, if there's already a large group of people involved in something and they seem to have things under control/don't ask for help, she's likely to stay out of it. But if it's a team just being put together and she's asked to help out or knows she could help out/has been provoked into helping, then she'll join in and pull her share of the load.
Abilities/Powers: Hinata is a ninja of chūnin rank and specializing in tracking. In terms of strength, Hinata is far from being the strongest, fastest or smartest. When compared to others her age, she ranks around the low-middle range in terms of all around ability. Though she is very good in (powered) hand-to-hand combat and is one of the more intelligent people of her age group.
What the lingo means:
Chūnin rank: Mid-level ninja. Shown to be capable enough in all-around ability as a ninja and in making decisive decisions in the midst of battle and/or with their team in mind. Also strong enough to be sent on C-Rank missions (*basically missions that pose a small risk of harm/combat, or involve: boydguard duty, background investigations, hunting/suppressing wild animals, etc...) alone, or B-Rank missions (*again basically missions where they are expected to run into combat, or involve: spying, bodyguard duty, espionage, assassinations, etc...) with a team.

Kekkai Genkai (Lit. "A technique limited to inheritance by blood"): Dōjutsu (Lit. "Eye Technique")
The Byakugan (Lit. "White Eye")
A supplementary technique; close-, mid-, long-range; unranked genetic/bloodline ability.
The Hyūga are one of the two noble families of Konohagakure no Sato, alongside the Uchiha, because of their unique eyes. Whereas the Uchiha have the sharingan, the Hyūga have the byakugan; both eye-techniques are unique to their respective families. The byakugan, unlike the sharingan, manifests itself in all family members at birth instead of a mere fraction that then need to awaken it.
While with the sharingan one can easily understand all the principles behind ninjutsu, taijutsu and genjutsu, along with granting one the ability to caste unique genjutsu; the byakugan allows its user to "see through everything" and easily understand the principles behind chakra circulation and use. It can see straight through immediate objects, anything situated remotely ahead/behind/underneath/sideways, and through a body to its "acupuncture network" through which chakra circulates, along with the apertures that are used to release chakra from the body: the "chakra openings". With this sight, one can collapse the chakra network of an opponent and render them incapable of using any chakra.
The byakugan also grants its user near three-hundred-and-sixty degree vision-it has a small blind spot on the back of the user's neck just above the third thoracic vertebra. Hinata has been shown to have developed her byakugan to the point of being able to see around ten (10) km (around six (6) miles) in one direction. Whether or not she can see farther than this is unexpanded on.
When the byakugan is activated, the amount of chakra being directed to the eyes causes the veins around the temple along with the user's pupils to bulge.
Martial Arts: Jyūkenhō (Lit. "Gentle Fist Style")
There are two main fighting styles not only in the world of Naruto, but the real world as well: Gōkenhō (Lit. Strong Fist Style) which are used to cause external damage, and Jyūkenhō which are used to cause internal damage. Gōkenhō is the main style that most people use, even in Naruto, while in canon so far only the Hyūga have been shown to use jyūkenhō.
In the case of Hinata (and the rest of her family), she uses jyūkenhō to damage not only an opponent's internal organs, but to damage their chakra network through hand-to-hand combat. The jyūkenhō the Hyūga practice is a combination of the Chinese martial arts
Baguazhang and
Tai chi chuan, the Japanese philosophy of
Taoism, and
Acupressure. It is neither a
striking martial art nor a
grappling martial art, but a combination of the two that emphasizes following the motion of an incoming attack and disrupting the natural flow of the opponent through
pushing hands.
Jyūkenhō attacks utilize the user's entire body through smooth coiling and uncoiling actions, hand techniques used to close chakra apertures by injecting their own chakra into their opponent's chakra system, dynamic footwork and throws, and spherical movements.
Through training, a practitioner increases their natural flexibility and learns proper body alignment. Because of this, users are able to fight multiple opponents at once as they flow between opponents and attacks, which make jyūkenhō users quite skilled in evasion and sneaking behind their opponent. Pushing hands then comes in from here, as empty-/open-handed hits and pushes are used to disrupt the opponent's center of gravity and collapse chakra openings.
The principles behind this style of fighting coupled with the byakugan allow for a practitioner to not only easily use any weapon, but to actually be a weapon capable of killing with a simple touch.
Jūho Sōshiken (Lit. Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists)
This is apparently a unique jyūkenhō attack Hinata has developed. Using chakra she has released through the palms, Hinata molds it into a large lion-shaped shroud around each hand and through spherical attacks thrusts it toward an opponent. Its damage is never seen in the manga.
Chakra
Chakra, in the world of Naruto, is what is necessary to use any techniques other than taijutsu. This is done through kneading the physical and mental energy contained in the body's 130,000,000,000,000 cells (or so) into chakra, and then converting chakra into jutsu through the use of hand seals. Only when done correctly can one use jutsu, or even to enhance physical abilities.
(This above information is paraphrased from the official databooks.)
Every ninja, in Konoha at least, has the same set of basic skills granted through chakra use. The mastery of these is either required or basic knowledge had before one can graduate to a genin:
Adhesion/Repelling→ Through constant concentration and coating of chakra along the soles of the feet (or palms of the hand, or any part of the body), a ninja can "stick" themselves to a solid surface like a tree, wall, or ceiling. Alternatively by expelling chakra through any part of the body, they can create enough friction to stand on top of non-solid surfaces, such as bodies of water. This allows Hinata to tree-, wall-, ceiling-, and water-walk.
Henge no Jutsu/Transformation Technique→ A basic technique that allows the user to transform themselves or another into the appearance of another person, object or animal.
Bushin no Jutsu/Clone Technique→ A basic technique that creates an intangible copy of the user; the clones are usually illusions and will dissipate when touched, and the byakugan and sharingan can see through them.
Kawarimi no Jutsu/Body Replacement Technique→ A basic technique that allows the user to quickly replace their body with another object within reach the moment an attack hits.

NON-SUPERPOWER CAPABILITIES
This information is mun-fudged from databook stats and the manga up to her canon point.
1. Hand to Hand Fighting:
Powered: 3.5/5
Unpowered: 1.5/5
With her Byakugan and chakra, she's a deadly opponent. And she has a unique fighting style that people not from her world shouldn't recognize fully. At the same time, she's pathetically weak and slow, and nowhere near as good as others in her clan are with Jyūkenhō. Take away the Byakugan and chakra, and the most she can do is activate pressure points, upset another's center of gravity, and maybe do a little damage to some internal organs/muscles.
2. Short Range Weapons:
Powered: 1.5/5
Unpowered: 1.5/5
She only has basic knowledge and some field experience to draw off using
shuriken,
kunai, and
exploding tags. She is more of a "hands-on" fighter.
3. Long Range Weapons:
Powered: 0/5
Unpowered: 0/5
She is a close-combat hand-to-hand fighter. This shouldn't be surprising.
4. Pain Tolerance:
Powered: 9/10
Unpowered: 8/10
Hinata has been shown to have a very high pain tolerance with and without chakra. She has withstood two on-panel curb-stomp battles where she was nearly killed and still managed to stand up and continue fighting (or remain conscious) despite having suffered wounds that would have been fatal if not for swift medical attention. In one, she was impaled through the chest with a rod and remained conscious through it all after a short but painful fight. In the other, she continued to stand and fight despite having no access to her chakra and heavy damage to her internal organs and heart. Without showing any outward signs of pain (aside from Bleeding From the Mouth and labored breathing).
5. Stamina:
Powered: 4/10
Unpowered: 2/10
With chakra and the control she has over it, she can keep on going for a while longer than a normal human would. Along with being able to travel for long distances with little fatigue. Without chakra, she is at the level of a normal human, if not a little below.
6: Medical Capabilities:
Powered: 0/5
Unpowered: 1/5
She has no knowledge of medical jutsu or anything beyond basic first aid. She's not medically inclined in any way as it's not the kind of ninja she wants to be/is shown to be. But given the nature of missions, she does have a very basic knowledge of normal human first aid.
Weaknesses: She is self-conscious and self-doubting to a large degree. Often just being told that she would be in the way, or finding that she can't do something to help out, or anything of the sort is enough for her to think that she really is in the way or useless and gets her to immediately stop whatever she was doing. Also, she does have an inferiority complex that could happen in small degrees toward anyone who is that much stronger, faster and smarter than her.
Also Hinata may take a while to think about her next course of action, but often this backfires as she then overthinks herself into failure. And while she has developed something of a backbone, words of discouragement and scolding do affect her and will keep her from a plan of action.
Because she is easily discouraged and still bears some of the self-consciousness from being berated much of her childhood, she is socially awkward in most situations. She doesn't always say what she means, nor does she say it concisely; physical displays of affections are a sure-fire way to reduce her to a stuttering, blushing mess; she doesn't know how to react to compliments, and she will sometimes apologize for things she doesn't need to.
As mentioned above, though Hinata is trained in hand-to-hand combat, she is extremely weak and slow. Even most normal humans can be stronger than her and even faster. This is somewhat justified in that she doesn't need physical strength in order to cripple an opponent, but her speed is lacking enough that one could dodge her attacks. Or so her databook stats for her strength and speed imply, along with her fights with Neji and, more recently, Pein.
Hinata is, at times, too empathetic, too kind, and too gentle to be a good heiress or ninja. She looks for the good in people, even those hated by a village, and she will do all she can to ensure that those she considers her "precious people" are safe and happy. This even includes getting into curb-stomp battles to protect someone from an enemy despite knowing she'll likely die, or to protect someone from theirself despite knowing she would lose and be beaten badly. Basically, she has little self-preservation when it comes to those she cares about or anything she feels strongly enough about to fight for.
(Semi-optional): A MUST FOR POWERED CHARACTERS - Please state conditions necessary to:
CAUSE DEATH: Just like a normal human. Especially since she can't heal herself with chakra. Impaling, beheading, drowning, death by fire, death by vicious fight... She might take a little extra effort to kill given that she is very stubborn, but she can be taken down by any and all means necessary.
INCAPACITATE: Again, just like a normal human. With a little extra effort. Because, canonically, she is tenacious when it comes to living and staying conscious. But: blows to the head, breaking bones, impaling her, etc, etc...
Death: I'm mostly OK with everything being done to her from minor injuries to death. But only if they are done with a point, ie. no pointless killing or injuring, and done with permission. Which is likely to always be given.
OTHER: The only thing she really has is a light metal mesh underarmor that she is almost always wearing (in canon, at least). It doesn't offer up much protection because it is very light armor, but it does block/reduce the damage of weapon slashes to her torso.
Headcanon: She does have something of a new hobby that is reading. Because she now has the time for it. Along with learning games. (AKA: slacking on the physical training part more than she should be.)
On a more serious and practical note, she is trying to train more to become stronger in the physical sense and to be a better tracker. Learning of the Dead Zone has made her realize that she would be very useless out there in every aspect, even the tracking one. Nowadays, she is in the crime section of the library pouring over its books and recreating scenarios on paper to try and work them out on her own.
