PLEASE GO CHECK OUT THE HECK!
I just discovered the most amazing band ever. THE HECK! I have never in my life been blown away like last Wednesday. I only discovered them because Dave's band played at a Bodog Battle of the bands. I took my friend Lauren who loves live music like I do and is game for most things. We got there just in time for Dave's band and then decided we might as well stay for a few more bands. The one immediately after Chrome 44 was probably as bad as The Heck is good. (Cryptic if you want a good laugh). The next two were so-so, but then came THE HECK! In less than the first half of the first song, Lauren and I were up and front.
The best way to describe the way that show was this: It was the witnessing of probably the greatest band I've EVER seen. So much talent and presence in just three baby members (they're all 21 or less). They have every advantage on their side, youth, a contract, looks, and holy shit talent. I only compare them to Rush because they're a three piece band in which each member is a master of his craft (and they happen to be from Canada). Each one of them had to be the best at what they do of any non-established band. If they sound this way after only one albumn, I can't imagine what the future holds for them.
Their sound is pure rock with a semi-punkish twist, maybe The Rolling Stones crossed with The White Stripes? Modern yet destined to be classic. Their song writing is so perfect, each one is memorable without strictly following chorus lyric chorus lyric, etc. Brian's vocals are distinct yet instantly likeable (something that can't necessarily be said of Geddy Lee). Trevor plays bass like most bands play their lead guitarist, yet balances this out by backing off and supporting each other member when appropriate (something that a lot of newer bands ignore). And Malcom, what a showman, able to put off enough personality to keep up with the other two. All of this yet absolutely no egos on stage, just pure joy to play. They have amazing melodies, tight harmonies, dammit if each one isn't the cutest thing I've ever seen. Brian looks like a mini-Mick Jagger. They all have a very cute effortless style.
If that weren't enough, they are the nicest kids you have ever met. We didn't know that they were already signed to Bodog when we went to the first show. After their set, we went up to them to tell them how much we enjoyed the show and they were very appreciative and took the time to talk to us, asking us for constuctive criticism and finding out what we based our opinions on. Then they gave us 7 tickets to the next show!
That show was this past Monday. I traded shifts specifically to see them again because they wouldn't be back to Texas for a long time. Monday rolled around and I almost didn't go but thank god Lauren dragged me out because the second show was even more amazing. It's possible that it was because we were able to get over the initial shock of how good they were and take it all in. It's possible, but I think the crowd was more receptive (albeit much smaller). They even gave us a shout out :-) My friend Kris came this time and he was equally impressed.
They came and hung out with us after the show. Kris was able to get a club to let them play for a little bit, but the DJ's whose night it was threw a fit, which I thought was immeniently ironic due to the fact that these are the sorts of people who whine about how no one understands their type of music. The guys only really got to play one song but it was nice to hear them on a proper sound system.
The rest of the night was a drunken blur, a mostly tame version of what you'd think hanging out with a rock band might be. The only bad part was that Lauren lost her camera and I didn't have mine with me. Oh well, I'll remember that night forever.
If you made it through this far, I beg you to check them out.
