Yeah, I in fact just read it the other day... Kinda sad, seeing as how I am an english major and I'm reading a kid's book. Though for the record, to this day I love children's literature, at least when it is well written. I think that there can be beauty in simplicity. Speaking of which, they are making a movie of "The Polar Express," which has to be my favorite child's book of all time. It will be starring Tom Hanks as the conductor of a train that takes kids to the north pole... It was the drawings that really wowed critics though. They were very soft and detailed dark and muted. If the movie recreates that feeling, then it will be worth the outrageous prices that they charge nowadays.
But anyway, the reason that I was posting, the ending to "The Giver" was disappointing... It was him getting onto a sled, like in the first memory that he recieved. It was left for open interpretation, which is often times a good thing, but in this case a little frustrating. In my opinion, Jonas died, and relived this final memory while freezing to death in the snow. But then, that's a little pessimistic for a child's book. My biggest qualm with the book was how Jonas decides to change things, and suddenly they magicly change the community's way of life in like one night, after hundreds of years of tradition. I think that pursuing this direction was a shallow mistake on the part of the author. But other than that, a fascinating book... I'd say the rough equivalent of Aldous Huxley's "A Brave New World" for children.
