Nick noticed the short, jumpy kid trying to get his attention, and wandered over, taking a gulp of beer. "You want something?"

"You might want to take care of the soda," Alex said quietly. "Before it, y'know.... explodes."

Nick smirked. "What, someone been shaking it? I hear tapping on the top takes care of that."

"Not the cans, the case."

Alex pointed carefully. "It's wrong inside- there's twelve cans, not twenty four... and there's something... the bottom, see? I think it's something I shouldn't touch but you probably should before things get very bad."

Nick's smile disappeared, and his eyebrows rose. "Hang on, kid," he murmured, "you think someone's trying to bomb the party?"

Alex nodded emphatically, and indicated the soda case again. "When I tore the tape, the cans came out and there's not as many as there should be in there and I think the bottom's false and what's in there is very not good..."

He kept his voice low. "That lady over there with Kya... she put the soda down. I told Kya to keep her busy, then called you. I don't know what else to do. I'm really not equipped to handle large-scale disaster so I think you better make it not do what it's supposed to do. And uh... maybe we should keep people from panicking too."

Nick frowned and nodded, crouching, carefully examining the soda box as best he could. Finally he looked up.

"Okay, kid, this is what I want you to do. Go find Jolee Madison -- the pretty little redhead -- and tell her what you told me. I'll see what I can figure out here."

The soda case did indeed have a false bottom -- carefully glued into position, from the look of things. If it was a bomb, it could certainly conceal enough explosives to give everyone at the party a very bad day. And whatever it was, it certainly wasn't empty.

"Yessir," Alex said, bobbing his head in a rapid nod, then strolling off towards the pretty redhead in question, careful to look casual.

"Um, excuse me Miss Madision - Nick said I should tell you about the soda issue..."

"Soda issue?" Jolee asked. She looked over towards Nick, and the orange soda case he was crouched over. "Why, are they out of root beer?"

She knew orange wasn't Nick's soda of preference.

"Situation," Alex clarified. He lowered his voice and leaned in to explain. "That woman over there with Kya... she brought a case of orange soda. But there's something in the bottom - something that's probably going to explode. So Nick's taking a look at it, and he told me I should come tell you."

"Oh dear," Jolee said, frowning and looking over towards Nick. "I'm going to go see if he needs any help. Thank you..."

She started heading on over to Nick, trying not to look too worried, despite how her heart was racing.

"I'm just going to go away now," Alex muttered. "Just in case."

He started carefully counting his steps as he walked away from the party, having done his part and now leaving the rest entirely in other hands.

Nick furrowed his brow, listening, examining, testing -- then, very carefully, started to ease the back panel off the box.

The panel came off about an inch before Nick felt a pressure -- enough to stop what he was doing immediately. Apparently, a tripwire was attached to the edge as a failsafe, and had he tugged it all the way off uncarefully... it probably wouldn't've been pleasant.

From what he could see, what was directly behind the panel was a mess of wires and explosives... and a little timer that was gradually counting down. At the moment, it was at 9 minutes, 38 seconds. There'd be time for a more precise examination later, but right now, the part catching his attention was at 9:35... wait, 9:34... no, 9:33.

Jolee peered down over Nick's shoulder, and bit her bottom lip. "...that's not good, is it?"
