Phi Delta Kappa Rules!

Who: Lisa, Richard, Katie, Tina, Stephan
Where: Espresso Pump
When: Friday evening

Lisa walked into the Espresso Pump. It was her first time visiting it, so she hoped the food was good. The diner was closed for some stupid reason, and she wasn't sure what to think of KenTacoHut.

Richard was settled at a table, his motorcycle helmet on the floor beside him, so it was a pretty good bet that the motorcycle out front was his, as well. He had a recent issue of The Economist open, and he was sipping on an espresso.

Katie was a regular at the Espresso Pump, because they were her cocoa supplier, and also excellent from a 'somewhere quiet to study without molestation' standpoint.

Tina was with Katie, quietly going over music for her band.

"You." Lisa pointed to Richard "You need to move your bike. Thanks."

Richard raised an eyebrow. "I'll keep that in mind, thank you," he said, and went back to reading.

Lisa looked at the guy, and wondered what planet he was from. His bike was parked right in front of the door. She considered calling the tow company.

"Any bets on how long it'll be before someone steals his bike?" Katie murmured to Tina.

"Fifteen minutes." Tina said, quietly.

"Okay... I'll bet thirty," Katie murmured, and went back to studying history, occasionally sneaking a glance up.

Lisa sighed, and went ahead to order her drink. She was almost certain the bike wouldn't be out there when she left.

Actually, Richard had specifically parked the bike where he could keep an eye on it because he'd read up on Sunnydale before his arrival. There seemed to be a pretty severe gang problem here.

Just to punctuate this point, a bored college student was eyeing the motorcycle. Grinning like a schoolgirl, he started sneaking towards it, bent over to try to minimize his visibility.

Tina looked up, and tapped Katie on the shoulder.

Richard set aside his magazine in annoyance and walked to he door of the coffee shop. "Scheisshund! Gehen Sie rauss!"

"Hey, speak American!" the student called, and slapped a "Phi Delta Kappa" sticker on the back of the bike, before running like hell.

Lisa thought it was all kind of funny, so, she burst out laughing.

Richard shook his head and resettled. He'd worry about the sticker later.

"Looks like you got stickered." Lisa snickered, and settled at the table with the German

Richard eyed her over the top of his magazine. "Sounds like you're stating the obvious."

"Yes, because it's funny. What were you going to do? Scare him with your German?" Lisa made a face at her drink, and added a packet of sugar

Katie looked amused. "... there's mad stickerers out there."

"It looks kinda fun..." Tina said "But it's probably against the law, or something."

Richard frowned. "Can I help you with something?"

"Yeah. Pass me a napkin." Lisa said

"Really?" Katie pondered. "Vandalism, I guess?"

Richard ignored her and turned a page of his magazine.

"Probably" Tina nodded "But it still looks kinda fun."

"Napkin?" Lisa requested "Unless you want me to reach over you for it."

"Hmm." Katie pondered. "It does, yeah."

"Why are you sitting at my table?" Richard asked, sliding the napkin dispenser ... not *to* Lisa, but moving it between himself and her anyway.

"This isn't your table." Lisa said, correcting Richard

"It is the table I'm occupying while I'm in the cafe," Richard said. "There are a dozen empty tables. Why are you sitting here?"

"I don't want to sit by myself, and you're closest in age to me." Lisa glanced around "I could sit with the girls over there, but they look like high schoolers. I could sit over on the other side of the place, but that entire group looks kind of dumb."

"We could sticker lockers." suggested Tina "How's the studying coming along?"

"Why do people have such an aversion to sitting by themselves? I've never understood that," Richard said. "You'd really rather sit with someone who very clearly doesn't want you at their table than be alone for fifteen minutes?"

"Why don't you want me at your table?" asked Lisa

"Because I don't know you and the first thing you did when you walked through the door was order me to move my bike," Richard said.

"Your bike was in my way." Lisa said

"Oh." Richard went back to reading.

Lisa grabbed her napkin, and tried her drink again. It was perfect. She smiled and sipped

Stephan walked around the bike and headed into the cafe, eying the menu.

Lisa looked up, and jumped up to tackle hug the Stephan.

Stephan got tackle-hugged. He was pretty sure he didn't have any groupies, yet. "Ooof ... hi ... wait, Lisa? What the hell?"

"College." She smiled "I tried calling you, dorkface. You didn't answer. So, where are your friends? Where are all the parties?"

"They'll steal the bike together," Katie commented.

"Uh ... not so much with the friends and parties, I'm just working a lot. College? Here?" Stephan looked puzzled, and a little worried.

"Maybe they're starting a gang." Tina suggested "They might watch too much news."

Lisa sighed, and sat at her stolen table again. Stupid brothers. She was obviously in college in Sunnydale.

"Uh ... yeah." Stephan ordered a drink, walked over and settled beside Lisa. "Look, I'm glad to see you, but Sunnydale's kind of an odd place."

Richard eyed the second new arrival and shook his head. Americans had no respect for personal space.

"Well, you're odd. Sunnydale is odd. Seems to be a perfect fit for you." Lisa stuck her tongue out at Stephan.

"Yeah, but it's ... hi, 'scuse me," Stephan said, reaching across Richard to get some sugar. "It's really not a good place, it's not very safe."

Richard drained his coffee and stood up to leave.

"Damn those wacky bike thieves," Katie concurred.

Tina giggled

"Damn, he's leaving," Katie added.

"Bye Germy." Lisa waved "It doesn't seem that bad. I mean, Detroit seemed worse than this."

"Aww... But this was kinda fun to watch." Tina said "A nice break from looking over metal music, anyway."

"Well, yeah, but you know what neighborhoods to avoid in Detroit. Here it's like ... There was this massive driveby at a diner not long ago," Stephan said.

"Is that why it was closed?" Lisa rolled her eyes "I wanted pancakes, it was closed. Damnit. Who do I call to open it back up?"

Katie nodded. "And better than the Dark Ages."

"I have no idea," Stephan said.

"Where do I get pancakes?" Lisa asked "And I'll figure this town out. It's called Sunnydale. How bad can it be?"

"Nonono, don't say that," Stephan laughed.

"I think your best bet for pancakes right now is the dining hall at school," Stephan said. "Until the diner reopens. Or I could make you some."

"What, are you going to say that this town is like Elm Street, or something? I didn't have any dreams about a guy in a striped shirt and a Fedora, so I'd say I was safe. And fine, tomorrow morning."

"Why here?" Stephan asked. "Of all places."

"Cheap tuition, dorky brothers, desire to leave the crappy state of Michigan. What about you? Why are you here?"

"Close to LA, but rent is cheap," Stephan said. "And I'm kind of seeing someone."

"Ew. I need to break you two up." Lisa made a face

Tina smiled, and randomly gave Katie a hug

Stephan made a face right back. "Right. Like she'll listen to your loser ass."

Katie hugged and smiled.

"Are we dysfunctional?" Katie abruptly asked.

"No... I don't think we are." Tina frowned though "Am I doing something wrong? I can take you out more... and we don't fight."

Katie smiled. "No, it's just that every other couple around here seems sort of dysfunctional. It's sort of nice."

"I'll just tell her all about you." Lisa teased "And your teddy bear... and the dolls."

"I don't want to be dysfunctional." Tina said "I just want to be happy."

"Me either," Katie agreed.

"It's nice to be the sane people."

"She'll ignore you." Stephan said. And, as an afterthought: "And leave Mr. Bear out of this."

"You haven't told anyone about her. You sure she's just not some internet chick?" asked Lisa "I bet she is."

"...Yeah." Tina said

"No, she's a very nice girl from one of the big square States," he said.

"People actually live in those?" Lisa made a face "I thought those were just there to confuse people on quizzes."

"Relatively speaking," Katie added.

"Believe it or not," Stephan said. "Well ... I need to hit the road, I'm due at a bar in Los Angeles at six. You going to hang out here?"

"Yeah." Lisa said "I need your address or something. You're such a dork, and I'm so cool."

"You need a life," Stephan said with a smirk. He got up and headed for the door. "555-1072."

"Well.. yeah." Tina nodded

"And really, with all the weird stuff here, a little insanity isn't so weird," Katie added.

"You almost need it to survive" Tina agreed

"Exactly," Katie agreed.
