I just lucked out!

It is a Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia).

Whee! I always wanted to see a fritillary, just because it's a cool name! (The same reason I used to long to see a Tufted Titmouse and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker -- which I have, of course -- and a Blue-footed Booby, which I guess I'll have to go to the Galapagos some day to get. Although fritillary isn't as funny as those, it's still a great word!) And now I haven't just seen it, I have some really pretty pictures of one!

they decided to make the Northern Crescent (Phyciodes cocyta) a separate species from the Pearl Crescent (P. tharos).Oh, those dang lumpers and splitters. What a pain. They keep doing that with birds, too. I looked it up and at least this time it seems to be based on new information about them, but a lot of the time it seems to be just the philosophy of whoever is in power at ( ... )
