July 4th
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY, EVERYONE! Dessie and I are spending a quiet night at home together, but boy, is it noisy outside. All those fireworks! I hope nothing around here catches fire...
You see, I've never been into the whole PATRIOTISM thing.... But not because I don't like America! America's pretty neat, I think. What happened is, my father and his family moved here to California from France when he was a young boy, and he never really did like it here. He even told me once that if he didn't meet my mother and get married to her here, he would've left for France a long time ago and he'd even threaten in front of me and my brothers he'll move without warning one day... I've heard him call this country things like a "hypocritical white supremacist capitalist patriarchy"... and he'd go on about our "bogus two-party system" and "one-size-fits-all culture!" Er, so as you can see, I didn't grow up in a very patriotic household. (An odd thing, though: he's into many stereotypically American things, such as American football, baseball, car racing...) Good thing my mother would tell me to ignore him any time he'd go off on one of his tangents.
I'm not exactly what you would call a "flag-waver," but I'm happy to have grown up with NOTHING against America... I mean, it's not so bad! ...But maybe I don't show appreciation for the country often enough... I think now is a good time for all of us to reflect on what makes this country great!
