We didn't need to say anything to each other, as we walked to the garage for a car. Just a smile between friends and teamates was enough to tide us over during the car ride back to the Frat house. I forced myself to continue chatting, about the events of the day most of my banter was rambling and probably made no sense- but I had to do it to keep awake.
Thank the Lord the ride wasn't all that long. We were pulling up to the curb, and I should have been moving, should have been opening the door and stepping out of the car by now. Why wasn't I moving? I coughed to clear my throat and smiled back at Bailey. "Thanks for taking care of me tonight." I said to her. I had to let her know that I cared for all she'd done when she hadn't had to.
My hand longed to reach out and touch her shoulder, or her cheek, or her hand, but I kept it still. 'Keep professional...' A voice in my head warned me. "Really, I probably wouldn't have gotten back home tonight if you hadn't thought to get me a ride back." A moment passed as I tried to find something to say while keeping my eyes open. "Well goodnight." I finally decided to say, before opening the door and hurrying out. I waved the car off, and without a look after it, trudged myself back into the House and up to my bedroom, where I collapsed on my bed fully clothed.
I fell asleep almost instantly.
