we were vocal about the fact that we, the students, didn't want it despite the donors thinking that we did...
and today there is no 70 foot bell tower. the administration told us that they were only having meetings with us because they felt like they had to and regardless of what we said the donors wanted the building built, but look.... we changed their mind. we can make a difference.
i think the big thing on the topic of your post needs to be personal. I understand the communal aspect of the problems we have as the church and as APU.... but what do you have control over? you. you can choose where/when to shop, where to live ('glitzy' glendora or dirty azusa... wwjlive?), who to spend your time with... and if it's different from 99% of APU students or 95% of Christians in America... you just might be on the right track.
that too-oft quoted line of ghandi's... "be the change you want to see in the world" i think is right-on. do what you are thinking... be who Christ is calling you to be, then encourage others to be who Christ is calling them to be... and we'll all be the better for it.
