“Whoops.”

Deacon froze in the act of zipping up the last of his equipment.  “What do you mean by-?”

The lights in the elevator flickered before dying with a faint pop.  The floor beneath his feet lurched, making him clutch at smooth steel before falling still once more.  Heart in his throat, Deacon struggled to swallow.  “What did you do?”

He didn’t need to see Skyler to know that the other man was rubbing the back of his head.  “Uh, I may have overestimated my skills a little.”

A deep breathe steadied the urge to reach out and strangle a certain hacker.  “In what way?”

“Let’s put it this way, no matter what the movies say, never mess with the green wire.”

Deacon clenched his teeth around the curses that bubbled up the back of his throat.  “Can you fix it?”

“….Yes.”

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“It’s going to take some time.”

Too much time.  The clock was ticking, and any moment now the guards on the second shift would start their rounds.  So much for plan A.  Good thing he’d decided to bring the crow bar.  “You managed to get the damn thing to work the first time.  What went wrong?”

“If I knew I wouldn’t have made the mistake in the first place” Skyler pointed out.

Arms straining, Deacon used the crow bar to push the doors open far enough to insert his shoulder and used a combination of brute strength and carefully applied leverage to achieve enough room that Skyler could slip through.  “Try not to forget the bag.”

He had to give Skyler’s suggestions of just what he could do with said bag points for imagination if not practicality.

Deacon rolled his eyes heavenward as Skyler squeezed by him, rubbing up against all sorts of interesting places.  Wondering if the hacker had done that on purpose, Deacon fought his body’s instant response.

Once hacker and bag were through, Deacon shoved free, air gusting against his back as the elevator doors slid shut.  Snagging the bag from Skyler, he shoved it into the canvas sack that carried the rest of his tools before setting off down the dark hall.  Muffled curses told him the other man was close behind, which was just as well since Plan B had more holes than Swiss cheese.  He wanted the hacker within reach if he was forced to move fast, and considering Plan B hadn’t been Plan A for a reason….it was almost a given that something was bound to go wrong.

Deacon tried not to fume as he listened for any hint that the guards were close.  This was supposed to be a simple smash and grab, if in smash one meant carefully sneak in and out.  Get in, grab the hundred thousand dollar antique that some asshole CEO had the gall to use as a paper weight, and get out.  Things weren’t supposed to get complicated.

Of course, if Deacon had been serious about avoiding complications, he wouldn’t have agreed to partner with Skyler.  The man was a brilliant hacker with a streak of bad luck that should have landed his ass in jail years ago.  Which would have happened if Deacon hadn’t been there to yank it out of the line of fire time after time.

Not that Deacon minded too much considering that it was a rather nice ass.  He’d considered making a move once or twice, but had always stayed his hand at the last minute.  As often as he worked with Skyler, he wasn’t sure how the man would react and hadn’t wanted to risk it.

Deacon’s body was in motion before his brain had a chance to process voices at the end of the hall.  Grabbing Skyler by the collar of his shirt, he yanked him close even as his hand found the knob of the closest door.  Dragging the stunned hacker into the room with him, he shut the door, slowing at the last moment to muffle the noise of the door clicking closed.

Every muscle wire tight in anticipation of discovery, he barely noticed that Skyler remained clinging to him.  The tension racketed up when the voices grew closer, and their breaths froze as the guards came even with the door, only to rush free when the guards kept walking.

“Of all the places to choose, you would pick a supply closet.” Skyler whispered.  Deacon could detect a faint trace of amusement.

A sweeping glance could just make out a jumble of mops and brooms in the gloom, the faint light creeping beneath the door allowing him to see in muted shades of grey and black.  The lack of space explained why the hacker remained pressed up against him, hands clutching at Deacon’s shoulders with surprising strength.

Deacon smirked.  “Remember this the next time you’re faced with a green wire.”

“In that case I’d never get the elevator moving.”  Deacon grunted when warm lips touched his own.  They were softer than he’d expected, and tasted like the sour candies Skyler liked to suck on.

When Skyler leaned back, Deacon hooked an arm around his waist to hold him close.  “What brought that on?”  It took some effort to keep his voice steady, which was probably a wasted effort since Skyler could probably hear his heart pounding.

“You were taking too long to make the first move, so I figured it was up to me.”

“And you thought the perfect moment was while hiding in a supply closet during a job?”

“At least this way you couldn’t freak out on me without the risk of discovery.”

Deacon’s thumb brushed against Skyler’s bottom lip, and he was glad that the gloom concealed his look of wonder.  He would have thought he was dreaming if he couldn’t still taste Skyler’s candy on his tongue.  “That also means I can’t throw you up against the first wall I find and kiss you senseless.”

He could almost feel Skyler’s smile as the hacker ground their hips together for one blissful moment before pulling back.  “Then I suppose you better get us out of here.”

Leaning in to steal one more kiss before risking the hallways, Deacon almost felt bad for any guards that might stumble upon them.
