Through Friends Ziva and Tony were standing in the observation room, watching Gibbs who was watching their suspect. “He lawyered up rather quick, didn’t he?” Ziva said, turning to Tony.
He chuckled and nodded. “He knows he’s in trouble if he just sits there with Gibbs. Getting
a lawyer will get him out of there.”
Just then McGee burst into the room. “Especially when you see who his lawyer is!” Tony turned eagerly to the window and Ziva fixed her gaze on McGee. A petite brunette walked into
the interrogation room calmly and immediately her gaze drifted to Gibbs.
“Oh, they sent Todd?” Tony chuckled and rubbed his hands together. Ziva looked at him and quirked her eyebrow up. “Oh right, you’ve never seen Caitlin! She’s the only woman I’ve ever seen stand up to Gibbs’ crap. Most of the female lawyers that come in here just wilt under Gibbs’ gaze. Not Caitlin Todd.” He turned back to the window. “Just watch.” All three gazes turned to the scene in the interrogation room.
“Agent Gibbs, you weren’t really trying to talk to my client without me present, were you?” Caitlin Todd asked sweetly, her gaze a mix of chocolate and steel.
“Now, Ms. Todd, you know me better than that,” Gibbs replied, smirking slightly. “Although, your client here was found trying to get rid of the murder weapon.” He got up from his seat, both his hands still firmly on the table, attempting to intimidate the young sailor.
Kate mirrored his pose on the other side of the table. “Did you have a warrant to go storming inside his house like that?”
He chuckled and straightened up, keeping his gaze firmly on the woman in front of him. “Didn’t need one. He was throwing it away in a public dumpster.”
For a moment, Kate’s eyes flashed and everyone could tell that she wanted to slap some sense into her client. But her professional façade was quickly back in place and she smiled tightly at Gibbs once more. “Did you find his prints on the weapon?”
Gibbs sighed and looked down. “No, we didn’t.”
Kate straightened and smirked in victory. “Then you’re not charging him with anything, Agent Gibbs?”
Gibbs spared a glance at the pathetic man, practically trembling in his chair. “No. Not yet.” The last two words certainly impacted him and the man made a face. “I’m sure we’ll see each other again.” Gibbs’ gaze turned back to Kate. “Ms. Todd.”
She nodded and turned to her client. “You can go home, Bill. I’ll be in touch.” The man got up and was out of the room like a shot. Then, she turned to Gibbs. “Agent Gibbs, it was a pleasure, as always.” He had come around the table and she brushed against him as she made to leave.
His hand shot out and caught her arm in a gentle grip. “Do you ever get out of that power suit?”
Her lips quirked up in a true smile when she looked down at his hand encircling her arm. He quickly dropped it back down to his side. “Sometimes.” Her smile softened when she looked up at him. “After a case is done.”
He understood her silent statement and nodded. She was about to walk out of the room, before turning back. “You know, you might need my number…you know, for the next time you unlawfully detain one of my clients.” Gibbs smirked and held out his notepad and paper to her.
Kate laughed and quickly scribbled down her number. She handed the pen and paper back to Gibbs and tucked her hair behind her ear. “Until next time, Gibbs.”
“Bye, Kate.” The corner of his mouth lifted slightly as he watched her walk out of the room. Then he turned to the window. “Do I pay you three to stand around and talk? Get back to work!”
