Summary: The Doctor's greatest desire is Rose Tyler.
The only thing he was aware of right now was the fact that Rose Tyler was in his arms. He didn’t know how or why, but he found that he didn’t particularly care, because she was here and she was real and oh Rassilon he had missed the way she smelled.
He felt her giggling as he inhaled the scent of her shampoo deeply and resisted the urge to just bury himself in her hair. She backed away slightly and he controlled his instinct to pull her back to him. She was here, she wasn’t going anywhere.
“Glad to see that you’ve been keeping busy without me then.” She grinned and wove her fingers through his hair. “Getting into trouble just as always.”
“Hard habit to break.” He smiled indulgently at her and leaned into her caress. “Mind you, what trouble did you find me in exactly?”
Rose just laughed and her eyes twinkled. “You were on Tralax, remember? Great telepathic beings, distracted you with your mind’s greatest desire while they tried to break into the TARDIS. I had my device,” she patted the medallion around her neck, “set to find you no matter where you were, so I barged in, saved you and Donna and then we ran off in the TARDIS. And here we are.” She gestured to the control room. “And then you snogged me.”
He chuckled and nodded. “Ah yes. Which brings to mind the question, why did I stop?” He leaned forward and she met him halfway. After another thorough snogging, they broke apart, Rose gasping and the Doctor smiling smugly.
“To answer that question, it’s because I don’t have a respiratory bypass system that I can put to use, you cheeky alien.” Rose playfully pushed on his chest, stepping away from him slightly, and turning to run her hand over the console. “I’ve missed this.” She murmured, stroking the edge lightly.
The Doctor wrapped his arms around her waist and leaned in to nuzzle her neck. “We’ve both missed you. Old girl would never admit it, but you’re her favourite. Next to Jack, but that’s for entirely different reasons that I don’t often like to think about.” He wrinkled up his nose, recalling a time when he accidentally walked in on Jack giving his ship some “special treatment”. Rose just laughed and turned around in his embrace, facing him once more. “You might be my favourite too.” He murmured to her, his gaze focused on her.
Her smile could almost stop his hearts it was so bright and it had been so long since he had seen it. “Good thing. Glad to know that I didn’t travel all this way for nothing.” She leaned forward and rested her head against his shoulder. “It’s been far too long.” He made a noise that she took for agreement. “I had a fantastic life over there you know. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you…lots of things have changed.” She practically whispered the last part. She refused to meet his gaze, but instead grabbed his hands and brought them up to her chest.
He was about to make some rude comment about moving too fast when he stopped and realized what he was feeling. “What?” He looked down at Rose, who still refused to meet his gaze as he processed what was happening. “What?”
She couldn’t help the small giggle that escaped her at his tone. “I don’t know why, but I started changing after the gap closed. It was slightly terrifying…new universe, having my biology rewritten…put a little bit of an unnecessary strain on adjusting.” She finally dared to look up at him, thousands of different emotions running through her eyes. “It’s been 97 years since I’ve seen you Doctor. That’s why I came over when I did…everyone in that universe that I cared for is gone. Thought it was time to come find you.”
And now he understood why the Rose Tyler that he had in his arms didn’t look all that different, but her eyes looked ages older. Because she had really done the impossible, she had given him back something he thought he had lost for good. “You’re…”
“Like you.” She finished his thought, her hands covering his hearts, just as he was covering hers. “I didn’t think it was possible to change species, but traveling with you always did expand my horizons.” Her smile was weak but true. It expanded to a true Rose Tyler smile though when he swept her up in his arms and swung her around.
“Rose Tyler, you are brilliant! It must have something to do with the time vortex; I don’t know what else could have that sort of power. But changing your biology? Absolutely inspired!” He set her back down so her feet touched the floor again and beamed at her.
“Now I can really give you that forever.” Rose said, ducking her head shyly. The Doctor hooked a finger beneath her chin and tilted her head up, so she was looking at him once more.
“And I’ll thank Rassilon that I get to spend every moment of it with you.” Leaning down, he brushed his lips against hers, gently, lovingly. She sighed and melted into his embrace, her arms winding their way around his neck. They stayed there, just kissing for a few minutes before Rose backed away.
“You know this isn’t real.” She murmured against his ear, trailing kisses down his neck, her tongue tracing over one pulse point and then switching sides to give the same treatment to the other one.
“Huh?” His lack of coherent response, he blamed totally on the little minx in front of him and the wonderful things she was doing to his neck. Then her words sank in. “What do you mean?” He stepped away from her and looked at her concernedly.
“Come on Doctor….they’re making you think I’m here.” She stepped close to him again and wrapped her arms around his torso. “I know that somewhere in that huge Time Lord brain of yours you know that…In fact I’m proof that you know that.” She leaned in and gently kissed him, as if to soften the realization that he was coming to.
“My mind’s greatest desire…” The Doctor muttered, running his hands down her arms, as if to convince himself that she was real.
She smiled and nodded sadly. “And not that I’m not flattered and everything Doctor but…it’s not real. They’re trying to get into the TARDIS and even though they’re not close, best not let them get too fresh with her.” She giggled. “She only likes that when Jack’s around.”
“But…this feels so real. You feel so real.” As if to prove his words, he leaned forward, drawing her to him and catching her lips in a soul searing kiss. She responded enthusiastically, moaning as she opened her mouth to his tongue’s exploration. “How can that not be real?” He asked breathlessly as he let her go. Her hair was mussed, her lipstick smudged, and her lips were slightly bruised and he couldn’t quite accept the fact that none of that was real.
“You know how the Tralaxians work Doctor. They’re masters at their art.” Her eyes began welling up with tears as she spoke.
“It’s not possible.” The Doctor shook his head vehemently and wrapped his arms around her tightly. He buried his nose in her hair and continued to shake his head. “I got you back. The universe finally gave me something back…you’re here, you’re real.”
She muffled a sob in the skin of his neck. “I wish I were real Doctor. We both do. But I’m not…you don’t have me back yet.” She pulled back slightly and grinned at him sadly. “You have to wake up Doctor. Donna’s counting on you. And you know what? We’ll see each other again. I’m certain of it.” Rose turned and began walking towards the TARDIS doors.
“Rose! Wait!” The Doctor called out, not wanting her to leave yet. Turning around, she smiled sadly and waved, and with that, walked out the doors into the unknown.
In that moment, the Doctor’s eyes shot open and he found himself in some sort of observation room. It was easy enough to wiggle out of the weak restraints and find his clothing, sonic screwdriver in pocket and sneak out of the room. Really, the Tralaxians needed to work on their security. He found Donna in the room next to his and found the TARDIS a few hallways down, unguarded.
As far as escapes went, it was probably the easiest ever, the Doctor mused to himself as the ship took off into the Vortex. Didn’t stop it from being the most painful.
After a lot of moaning and explanation that there really was no giant shoe bazaar on Jupiter to Donna (apparently, that was what she had dreamt of), she asked him what he dreamt about. He just smiled sadly and she nodded her head understandingly, knowing that was his ‘Rose face’, as she and Martha had dubbed it. She went off to her room, saying she needed to clean up, but really understanding that he just needed time to himself.
He collapsed on the jumpseat, head in hands. He had been so close but still so far.
