Geez, I'm all for uncanon shipping these days, aren't I? 11/ Amy from DW, Eric/Sookie from True Blood. Now behold my newest, hot doomed ship: Damon and Elena from the surprisingly badass Vampire Diaries.
Pale skin, dark hair, insanely blue eyes you can see from a mile away...I dare you not to squee. I DARE YOU.
She's the sweet, level-headed girl next door who recently lost her parents in a car accident. He's the sociopathic vampire with one hell of a romantic streak who finds himself infatuated with the girl who looks exactly like his long lost lover. Its sort of unhealthy and that's what makes it so yummy!
Damon and Elena are the left side of the love triangle that also involves his arch nemesis/ baby brother, Stefan who is the love of Elena's life. And I say that without any irony or snark- Stefan and Elena are an honest to goodnes OTP who are wonderful together in so many ways. They stand by each other and protect each other and hey, Stefan is in no way opposed to sex before marriage which makes him awesome right off the bat. And I'm not the type of girl who automatically drools over a guy once he takes his shirt off but when Paul Wesely does it, the reaction is not so much hormonal as it is admiring a work of art.

Oh and in case the title of the show didn't clue you in, Stefan and Damon are vampires who hail from the Civil War era and have a longstanding rivarly that started when they fell in love with with the same vampire chick, the sexy and selfish Katherine who Elena happens to be the spitting image of. And as unsavory as it sounds falling for someone who reminds you of your ex, it's a far more logical reason as opposed to Bella who is a Mary Sue disguised as a normal girl and whom Edward loves for no discernable reason at all except for maybe her ability to out-wangst him.
I could probably do a whole 'nother post on why Stefan/Elena rock or why Stefan alone rocks (point one- setting another vampire on fire with a flamethrower. I'd like to see any one Cullen be that hardcore!) And the actor actually does justice to his Stefan, giving him just the right amount of anguish, menace and genuine sweetness. He's the boy next door if the boy next door was both willing and able to rip your throat out.
But Damon..sweet holy Hell, people. I think back on the first episode of s2 True Blood to the scene where Eric tore someone's leg off with his teeth. Believe me when I say Damon is twenty times more diabolical than Eric because Eric is restrained by his desire to at least appear like a law abiding citizen and not the blood-sucking sociopath he actually is. Damon just doesn't give a crap and all throughout the show, he's murdering people left and right. History teacher annoys him, snaps his neck, Girl tearfully tells him how pathetic her life is, breaks her neck. Needs an invite to a house and woman won't let him in- yup there goes that particular vertebrae. Old friend who sold him out because he happened to murder another mutual friend? Rips her heart out because I can only guess he was getting carpal tunnel from all the necks he's been snapping. Usually its not even self defense or even hunger, he's either a) bored b)annoyed c) trying to prove a point d) framing someone so there's not mistaking him for being misunderstood.
So why do I love him so much? Because everything he is and everything he has allowed himself to become was because of love. For Katherine, he was willing to become a monster and even when he lost her, he was still willing to do the right thing and allow himself to die (Bloodlines). But because Stefan loved him too much to lose him as well, he was forced to become a vampire just so his brother would still have someone. Hate Damon for the fact that he's an amoral killing machine but bottom line is that when he loves you, it may be twisted but it is absolute and he'll love you until it kills him or until you do. He loved Katherine for decades and didn't stop until he was told that not only was she alive but that she knew where he was and didn't care. You gotta give him props for realizing when someone just isn't worth the trouble.
But him and Elena are gold. When it comes to couples, I always tend to go mad for the ones that feel more like best friends/partners with insane chemistry than the outright lovey-dovey ones because its always honest and that's Damon/Elena. Its more than he ever had for Katherine who used him or Stefan since the two of them are trying to kill each half the time. In this case, caring for someone is so much better than actual romance because its simple and healthy for both of them. Damon will always be honest with her, usually brutally so; Elena sees him for both the man and monster he is and is still willing to go to bat for him, even if she doesn't entirely trust him. And he has this affection for her that is both demented and sweet. One moment, he's forcing her to drink his blood and threatening to snap her neck, the next, he's burying his face in her hair like she's the only thing keeping him sane.
Yup this is my OTP- a serial killer and mind rapist whose fixated on his ex gf's doppleganger. Yes, I know its sick but I can't stop!

It also makes him irrationally protective of her, whether its telling her brother to treat her better or slamming her biological mother's head on the floor for being a manipulative bitch. And while he's not actively trying to seduce Elena away from Stefan (I think he respects either one too much for that), he's not above having gratuitous eyesex with her or occasionally referring to her as "our girlfriend" when talking to Stefan. And she is sooooo their girlfriend. She has equal amount of funny/sweet/ hot/ angsty scenes with both of them If I can't have Damon/Elena as an endgame I will settle for a dysfunctional threesome because really? Its already halfway there.
And if it comes to pass, no jest, Vampire Diaries will become one of my favorite shows ever right up there with X-Files and Doctor Who.
