Faith, you're driving me away

Why not write about something serious again? Mainly because I have nothing else to write about...

I try hard not to judge religions and keep an open mind to all beliefs even if believe something completely different, but there are times in which I can't hide my disgust with the Catholic church.

There are so many wrong things with this seemingly harmless religion I won't even start talking about them, I'll stick to the topic at hand, which is how they're trying to meddle with that Italian woman's family wishes of letting her die.

First, there's the fact that she's already dead! What kind of life is one in which you hear nothing, say nothing, move nothing, are aware of nothing!? She's not living, and the biggest prove there is of this is that if people stop the machines feeding her, she dies. So, here's a controversy for you: why is that some technologies, like the ones that enable people to have less children - thus diminishing the amount of hungry people in the world - are bad and others are good, like machines that keep bodies alive while minds are dead?

Second, everyone of us have their own beliefs. If you belong to and organized religion, chances are it's pretty much the same as everyone else that follows it. Only, why is you belief better than mine? This is pertinent here because if that woman's parents wish to turn off the machines keeping her body alive it's because they believe it's better this way, so why should someone else's belief, a belief that this is wrong, be the one followed? Here we aren't talking ethics or laws, we're talking strictly about religious beliefs. Why try to make law about something that should be a wish of each and every one of us? If you believe that if something like that happens to you you have to be kept alive at all costs, then fine, I don't see a point but if you believe it... Now, as for me, if I were ever to be in a situation like this, I'd surely want the machines off imediately after the brain death being confirmed. There's no point in being alive if you can't actually live.

The most important point, however, is that we should be entitled to our beliefs and not have to make tough decisions like this based on what other people think is right. As long as our beliefs can't be scientifically proven, they're just that, beliefs. While I can't disagree with gravity, I can disagree with holy punishment for "killing" another human being who's only alive because a machine is kept on. Prove to me it's wrong and then you can make law about it. As long it isn't scientifically proven, everything is merely a battle of wills and who's more powerfull to have their beliefs followed. And usually the ones suffering in this battle aren't the ones fighting it.

*whatever, whatever: serious rant
