Do you know who Toby and Lulu are? I didn't either, until recently. It turns out that the comic strip "little lulu" has had some lasting impact on the Chilean psyche and culture. Those of you that know me, or have a good eye, know that I have curly hair. To have curly hair in Chile is to be called "La pequeña Lulú." No way around it. This I have known since I was dating Marcelo, who called me this (apparent) term of endearment far too much for me to take happily.
Enter Toby. Who the hell is Toby? Well, apparently Toby is, in Spanish, who we (those of us who attentively read the sucky comics in the Daily News) would have called Tubby. Lulu (Lulú)´s nemesis. And apparently, he had some kind of a fellers´ club, to which girls were not admitted. I wonder if this gave rise to the boys´and girls´playhouses on the Brady Bunch, but I digress. At any rate, this fellers´ club, as it were, has become somewhat of a Chilean institution. If men get together to hang out, shoot the shit and do whatever it is that men do when they are together, it is called "Club de Toby," or Tubby's (presumably fellers-only) club.
Of course! It is so simple. Take a cartoon that was really boring, and that I never read anyway, pull an antiquated term out of it, fast forward like 50 years, change the names, and expect me to know wtf is going on... Perfect.
Anyway, I just got back from my "club de lulú," and we had a great time. It was just me and Osa, but there was nary a feller around, so I think it counts.
