Wanted vs. Needed.

I had a discussion with a friend last night which centered mostly on this topic:

Is it better to be wanted or to be needed?

I am of the belief that it's better to be wanted. I mean, you can NEED something, but not necessarily like it or want to have it in your life... As an extreme example, take a diabetic who has to shoot insulin: they might not like doing it, but they need to. And now say the diabetic could only get insulin from someone they don't like very much - they're going to have to have that person around, but not WANT them around.

Is it wrong for me to say that I don't NEED anyone, not really, but I WANT them around? I mean, I don't think anyone is going to shrivel up and die without a certain partner. Life goes on, we go on. And while it may feel like NEED at times, we are all our own people and can carry on on our own.

Personally, I'd rather have someone who wants to spend time with me, by their own choice (and vice versa), but apparently this is keeping me from being in any type of meaningful relationship, according to my friend.

Maybe I'm the one with the wrong viewpoint?
