The strange object influenced the whole meal. The four diners didn't want to order the most expensive meal available in case they had to pay for more than one meal, but didn't want to buy a cheap meal that they wouldn't enjoy. Conversation was difficult, as everyone at the table apart from Amy were racking their brains for the use of her purchase. Throughout the meal they would turn their attentions to the lump of wood, and in some occasions even poke it. Still it seemed that no one was quite sure of what it was.
The other people in the restaurant were, without the four diners noticing, examining the lump of wood and coming up with their own speculations. Muttered conversations rippled through the room, while the four people in the midst of the controversy dined on, oblivious.
At the end of the painfully awkward meal when the plate were cleared, Amy sat back in her chair and regarded her companions. They looked at her, aprehensive, and waited for her to look less smug before they put forward their ideas. Dominic was the first to try his luck.
"Umm... Is it a letter holder?" He asked, pointing at the slots in the wood. "The letters could slide in there and stick out." Amy crossed her arms and shook her head. Paulie sighed and leant forward as Dom swore under his breath. "I was sure that was it!" He muttered.
"My turn. I guess a book end." He stated bluntly. Amy frowned, but shook her head.
"I guess it could be a book end, but that's not what I bought it for." She replied. Paul clicked his fingers in annoyance and turned to the final diner. She fiddled with her napkin for a moment, looking at the lump of wood, before looking at her friend.
"Is it a knife block? Dom took my guess of a letter-thing, so this was my back up." Amy looked at her friend, and shook her head again. She was about to tell them when another diner piped up.
"Is it a musical instrument? Where the different things make different tones?" They asked. Amy stared at them, confused, before shaking her head slowly.
"How about a jigsaw puzzle?" Asked another person? Amy turned to them and stared blankly. The other people took that as a sing to guess as well.
"Paper weight?"
"Foot rest?"
"Water feature?"
"Height chart?"
"Bookmark holder?"
"Credit card reader!?" Exclaimed a waiter loudly, getting caught up in the moment. Everyone turned to stare at him, causing the poor guy to blush. "I mean...it could be." Amy sighed and piced up the block of wood by the sides firmly and tipped it forward quickly. The small pieces of wood that made up the large piece shot forward, and by their design stopped from shooting accross the room. She placed it back on the table properly and looked at the people around her.
"It's a castle. See?" She pointed at the small marks on the 'turrets' "They're windows." Everone stared at her blankly. "I guess no one was even remotely close. I should have given clues." She muttered, pushing the parts back in to form the lump of wood once more.
