Mystery - part 1

Amy sat down at the table in the restaurant where her friends were waiting for her. She was puffing slightly and her face was flushed, as if she had run to get there. She was smiling broadly and holding a patterned calico bag alond with her usual handbag. Her three friends greeted her as she caught her breath; they were used to Amy being slightly late to meetings, and waited patiently for her to explain, knowing she'd be eager to share. The waiter came over to the table and provided her with a menu and a glass of water. She thanked him and took a gulp before turning to her friends excitedly.

"Sorry I'm late, guys." She apologised, quickly moving on to her explanation. "Would you believe that I left early to try and get here on time? Anyway, I found the coolest shop on the way here and bought this!" She pulled the calico bag onto her lap and placed on the table...

"A lump of wood?" Dom asked as he looked at Amy's purchase in confusion. "You realise that I have a shed full of lumps of wood that I could have given to you for nothing, don't you?" Amy laughed and picked up her menu, considering the meals available.

"It's more than just a lump of wood." She stated. She looked over the menu at her friends, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I tell you what; I'll leave this here, and at the end of lunch you guys can guess what it is." She scratched her ear absently. "If you get it right, I'll pay for your meal. If no one guesses correctly, then the person furthest off the mark pays for my food." She looked at her friends' reactions to her wager. "Deal?" She asked innocently. Her companions nodded while all looking at the piece of wood. Amy smiled smugly as she went back to considering her meal.
