Patients transferred to room 207 didn’t come out. Not alive, at least. It was the palliative care room: decked out in pastel furnishings, soft lighting, and a sofa for visitors.

Nurse Jane informed Hutch that his partner was now in room 207: “just down the hall sir, first on your right”. As if politeness trumps anxiety.
