Theyyam is a folk art originating in northern Kerala. It's a primitive ritualistic art, reflecting features of a tribal culture, which is performed in temples and kavus (sacred groves) to propitiate deities. A Theyyam (a form or shape) acts as a medium between the deity and the devotee.
The Theyyam represents a mythological, divine or heroic character. There are over 350 Theyyam in northern Kerala, each with a distinct shape, form and story of origin. The hood, headdress, face painting, breast plate, bracelets, garlands and fabric of attire of each are distinct and meticulously crafted according to the character presented.
