Chapter 38: Nothing
it was Christmas morning and Jaejoong hated the mixed feelings he was having. He was happy his parents were coming home that day, but he dreaded the fact he had to say goodbye to his big brother, Shirley. Shirley was acting like it wasn't a special day at all and it annoyed Jaejoong to say the least.
“Can you at least give me the address to where your going to live after you leave me?”
Shirley sighed and looked up from the dishes she was cleaning. “Why do you need my address?”
“Because I want to visit you!”
“I can just visit you,” Shirley shrugged.
“You'd never do that,” Jaejoong glared. “Just leave me your address. I swear I won't bother you and I'll call before I come over and-”
“Fine, Jennifer. I'll leave you the address, just leave me-”
They heard some rustling coming from the front door and Jaejoong dashed out of the kitchen to welcome his parents. Shirley followed him, immediately hearing Jaejoong's mothers squeals. “Jaejoong! You look so healthy! And your hair! It's so beautiful, you look so gorgeous!”
Jaejoong hugged onto both of his parents at the same time and Shirley bit away a sad smile. Who'd ever thought it'd be hard for her to say goodbye to her little slave, Jennifer?
Christmas and New Year came and left uneventfully.
It was the weekend before school would start again and Junsu knew that Yoochun could be back any moment. He had refused to tell Junsu the exact time and date of his arrival, just to be annoying. Junsu had contemplated staying at Yoochun's house for the whole weekend, but changed his mine when Yoochun texted him saying he'd call him the second he landed. It was Sunday had just turned into Monday and Yoochun hadn't called yet.
Junsu was sitting on his bed frowning, staring at his phone. “Screw this,” he murmured and picked his phone up, dialling Yoochun's number.
“Yo.”
“Yo, my ass. You said you'd call me.”
“I know, but it's passed midnight so-”
“Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know that all the phones at your house stopped working passed midnight,” Junsu said bitterly.
“I just thought you'd be asleep,” Yoochun chuckled. “But apparently you're not.”
“Of course not...so, where are you now?”
“I just came home. I'm still wearing a coat and everything.”
“Meet me halfway?”
Yoochun sighed. “Be fast.”
Junsu hung up and jumped out of his bed. He put on socks and shoes randomly and yelled a quick “I'm meeting Yoochun!” while he ran down the stairs, not waiting for an answer as he pulled his jacket from the coat hanger nest to the front door. It was snowing heavily and Junsu regretted not taking a scarf with him.
Halfway between his own house and Yoochun's they met. Junsu stared at him for a couple of seconds before realizing something was wrong.
“Your hair.”
“Yeah,”Yoochun smiled, raking his hand through his new, much shorter hairstyle.
“Where did it go?”
Yoochun rolled his eyes and pulled Junsu in a tight hug, tighter than the one they shared when he left. “Idiot,” he murmured.
Junsu wrapped his arms around Yoochun's back and squeezed him. “You should have called me.”
“I told you-”
“I mean when you cut your hair. You should have told me.”
Yoochun chuckled and took as step back. “Why?”
“Because,” Junsu shrugged. “That's what we do. You would have called me if you thought about cutting your hair six months ago.”
“A lot has changed since then,” Yoochun sighed and ushered Junsu to a random doorstep and they sat down, sheltered from the snow by the roof of the house.
“To much,” Junsu nodded.
“I've thought about it, you know?” Yoochun said, staring at the snowfall. “About everything that happened these last few months.”
Junsu didn't say anything and just stared with him.
“And you're right. Six months ago, I would have called you if I thought about cutting my hair. I'd even call if I was thinking about buying socks. We were like codependent and stuff.”
“I miss that,” Junsu sighed.
“Me too,” Yoochun admitted.
“So what's next?”Junsu asked, looking at Yoochun's side profile now.
Yoochun turned to look at him and shrugged. “Nothing.”
“What exactly is this 'nothing' you speak of?”
“Nothing is just...you and me.”
“No us,” Junsu nodded in understanding.
“No us,” Yoochun nodded. “Not now anyway.”
“So, you're saying that hypothetically speaking you wouldn't mind me dating someone else now?”
“Hypothetically speaking, I wouldn't mind,” Yoochun said, smiling.
“Bullshit,” Junsu chuckled. “You'd die on the inside.”
“Well, that's my inside's problem then, isn't it,” Yoochun said and dug something out of his pocket. “Here. Yoohwan got you a Christmas present.”
Junsu looked at the thin bracelet Yoochun was holding, sceptically. “Yoohwan?”
“Just believe on this. He bought one for me too.” Yoochun pulled up the sleeve of his jacket and showed Junsu the same bracelet.
“Yoohwan?” Junsu asked again.
“I swear!” Yoochun chuckled. “He made my dad buy two of them. He said he wanted my friend to get one too.”
“But I didn't get anything for him,” Junsu frowned taking the bracelet. “Can I send him something?”
“You can do anything you want,” Yoochun shrugged.
“Help me put it on. My hands are to cold,” Junsu murmured, fiddling with the lock of the bracelet. Yoochun, who's hands were much warmer because he had kept them in his pockets this whole time helped him put it on.
“It's actually pretty cool,” Junsu said.
“I know right? It's silver so-”
“I mean your hair,”Junsu said, taking the tips of Yoochun's hair between his fingers. “It kind of looks like Jaejoong's hair.”
“Only better, right?”
“Sure,” Junsu rolled his eyes. “Maybe I should do something to my hair too...”
“I'll help you colour it red,” Yoochun grinned.
“For like the millionth time, I'm not colouring my hair red,” Junsu sighed. “When was the last time you brought that up?”
“A long time ago. But I still think it'll look good on you,”Yoochun shrugged. “You could always colour it back if you don't like it.”
“Not a chance in the world.”
“We'll see about that.”
It felt like they had gone back in time six months. Like nothing had happened between them at all and Junsu was wondering if maybe that was better. Sure, he was disappointed with the 'nothing', but he could live with it for now. Maybe being able to date other people hypothetically wasn't a terrible thing.
They stood about half an hour later, ready to go their separate ways again.
“Before this whole 'nothing' starts,” Junsu said. “I want to know how it is to kiss a Park Yoochun with short hair.”
Yoochun took a deep breath and Junsu was scared he'd walk away, but instead he was the first one to take a step forward and press their lips together. The warmth that came from Yoochun's mouth took over Junsu's whole body, unexpectedly making him shiver.
Yoochun let go and smiled at him. “Nothing starts now.”
and two weeks later they were making out in the boys' bathroom. just kidding,/sigh
