August 3rd was my day of work at Indiana University. September 13th is the first day of my new job at the RaceTrac corporate office. Woo!
It was a weird progression to get this job. First, my sister works in human resources at RaceTrac. That really helps when looking for a new job. I highly recommend having a sibling work in HR when you are looking. It's a good tip, write it down. Anyways, she gave my name and resume to a recruiter at her company.
They looked over my resume and called me to do a preliminary phone interview for a communications specialist job. I think the interview went fine, but nothing in my background suggests I would be good at that job, so they decided to keep looking. No big deal, I understand. I would have needed a lot of training and I didn't have much experience.
The recruiter called me back and said she found another position that I would be better suited for. Admin assistant to human resources. I did the interview on August 16th and they really loved me. Again, it helps that my sister is in the HR department and everyone loves her. However, they decided to go with an internal candidate. I found this out on Wednesday. It was a bummer, but I can't really blame them for going with the internal person, it's just good office politics, you know?
About an hour and a half, the recruiter calls me back and says that they really liked me and thought I would fit in well with the company. She said that a new admin support position just opened up and they wanted me to interview for it on Thursday (yesterday). So I went in and did my interview from 3:00 to 4:00. I really wasn't sure how I did, because the director of maintenance is kind of an intense lady.
At 4:30, before I had even gotten home from the interview, Anne (the recruiter) called me back to tell me they wanted to make me an offer. Apparently the two ladies who interviewed me really liked me and wanted me on board. The salary they are offering is actually higher than I was asking and expecting. o.O :D She asked me if I could start on Sept. 20th. Of course I said yes, as I have no plans and that would give me a week to loaf around.
I was woken up by the phone this morning at 10:00 am (hey, I take my loafing seriously!). It was Anne and they discussed it and decided to ask me to start this Monday, the 13th. I immediately said yes. Even though a week of loafing is awesome, I've been loafing for the past 3 weeks and the sooner I start, the sooner I can get my first paycheck.
Anyways, it was both a long process, because I started doing preliminary interviews with the company at the end of July, and a super fast process. I went from being bummed out because they hired someone else to being hired in a day. While it's a bit daunting how fast they moved, I like that they were so decisive on this position. It's a good sign.
So anyways. That's kind of what I've been up to. Moving, looking for jobs, playing in Atlanta, helping Chris fix up his classroom, etc.
Boom! Employed!
