Here is what I would not recommend: "Hardware" (1990) directed by Richard Stanley. "Sinister" is a horror film that follows one white male and his family. The protagonist is a writer and a key element of "Sinister" is that he watches some disturbing movies - so if meta things bother you, you may want to avoid this one.
