I don't see why not.

I hope they fix it. I know the feature helps some people. It just drives me insane, the way autocorrect spell checks drive me insane. I type fast in a rhythm, and if I break that rhythm it's hard to pick up again.

If you're talking about entry tags, I found out by accident how you can not have them - at least until they fix this bug. If you have a tag that is entirely numbers, even if you've only used it one time, then autocomplete will not work. That might give you a temporary fix.

Though I agree that you should have the option to turn it off if you want.

It's just the autocomplete that goes off? Great. I'm going to try this.

Not a fan of the autocorrect, either. Thumbs up.

Thanks! Please drop a note in the Suggestions box then. If enough members want it under their conscious control to use or not... the techies will work on it?

LOL -- oh, this IS the autocorrect thread. Duh. I mistook it for a comments thread on my journal when I started answering the comments. Should have scrolled up to see what started it! rofl

When I try to type in new keywords, autocomplete will fill in the wrong word. I have to STOP typing, break the flow, swipe over the wrong word, type it in AGAIN

Now I haven't seen this feature because I don't have JavaScript turned on in my browser (so yes, there is a way to turn it off!), but from what I gather you are supposed to be able to keep typing and just ignore what it puts up - there should be no need to stop typing and delete what it says because the suggestions will disappear once you've typed enough for your new tag to be unique. If it doesn't work that way in practice then there's probably a bug somewhere.

They don't. It doesn't work that way for me. I watch the screen to see what I'm typing and it confuses me, but I also sometimes get a jumble because I type SO fast that it'll get some letters in before I finish the word, intermittently with my own typing. And then I have to backspace and then it'll insert the stupid thing again, and the ONLY way to avoid that is to slow down and stop, let it appear completely, then mouse back over to it and change it, if it doesn't reinsert... it gets nightmarish, and I think my typing speed has something to do with that.

I've tried this out now and can't get it to go wrong. On a good day I can type 80wpm. If I type really quickly into the Tag field, I can get the whole word in before it has even displayed any suggestions.

Now I understand that if you watch what you are typing it can get confusing to see words automatically popping up and for that reason you want it turned off. However, if it is actually inserting things into what you type then it's worth reporting that aspect of the problem as a bug. I realise you have contacted Support before, but if instead of asking "can you turn it off" you say "I am using X browser on Y operating system (and my CPU is a Z) and if I type 'flurble' without stopping then I end up with the letters 'fleeple' in the tag entry box" then there's a chance that someone will be able to find out what's wrong and fix it. (Unfortunately there's also a chance that no one will be able to replicate what you are seeing, and it will remain a mystery).

Colour me thick, possibly, but isn't auto-complete to do with your browser and not LJ?

Also, what do you mean by keywords? Are you talking about entry tags, or something else?

In the most recent release, LiveJournal added an auto-complete-as-you-type function to the Tags field in the Update Journal form. It's very popular among those people who frequently typo their tags or can never remember whether it was "emo-post" or "emo posts".

Yeah, if it was doing this all along, I would've mentioned it long before this. Thanks for mentioning that.

It just needs to be voluntary, not imposed on everyone including those that go nuts if something else is trying to crosstype over their words.

I am talking about entry tags, the long narrow one-line box that appears under the entry and gets labeled "keywords."

No, autocomplete on that line is something LJ does, not my browser. There is something like it on my browser, but only for filling in forms and passwords -- where I use it, because if I type something into a field where all I can see is dots, I get terrified of making a typo in it. I have to see what I'm doing, and can't see it if I look at the keyboard.

On my browser it only appears on login screens. I start typing my username and it doesn't finish typing for me, it drops down a little drop-down that shows all the usernames I use on that site, so I have the option of selecting one and letting it finish typing, which will also make it fill in the password and keep me from high anxiety. No one else on the planet is allowed to use my laptop, so it's not a security problem -- but I can turn off that feature easily.
