Maintainer and moderator conversations would be a lot easier, without having to make a second comm for them.

Even though setting up a community for the maintainers sounds so simple to a power user, it's one less thing to keep track of! I recently read a really fascinating article on decision fatigue, which suggested that even the tiny yes/no/where/here stuff adds up faster than one might think.

That could also be done by giving communities a maint/mod security level, analogous to the private level. That wouldn't cover every situation in which a maintainer might want to use custom groups, but it would have the benefit of simplicity.

It could also be easier to get, if anyone still feels strongly that everything posted to the comm should be posted to the entire comm - the reason comms can't currently post to custom groups. maint/mod only seems like a reasonable exception.
