Title
Log IP addresses on community posts

Short, concise description of the idea
IP addresses can be logged for comments, but not for posts. In cases of trollery, ban evasion etc this is unhelpful as the troll/sock may not leave a handy comment.

Full description of the idea
In one of my communities we recently had someone pop up trying to evade various rules by flooding the community with borderline trolly posts, under half a dozen different usernames. For the most part they did respond to some comments so we were able to match up IP addresses and show they were the same person, but it took a bit of hunting down (not all comments were in the same post that they'd posted with that name).

I suppose this should probably be a setting people can switch on/off, but I don't see why it couldn't just follow the setting to log IP for comments. I can't imagine why you'd want to log one but not the other.
An ordered list of benefits
  • See above.
  • Also finding posts by a user is much easier than finding comments by a user so being able to see IP addresses on posts would be very helpful if mods are trying to look up the IP address of User X.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Finding a sensible place to display the information (I think the line with the time and date would be just fine).
  • Finding somewhere to put a warning to users that their IP address is being logged, as with comments.
  • Inevitable outcry from users who think all IP logging is an invasion of their privacy.
