Add an option to make posts in a community visible to maintainers only.

most communities that need maintainer communication just make a 2nd community for the maintainers.

Another option I've seen is to make a special mod journal that only mods are given the password to.

That's not really recommendable - LJ discourages the sharing of passwords to personal accounts.

Yes, but it can be a little less unwieldy to have everything in the same spot. Why use a workaround when you don't need to?

actually I find it super helpful to have the extra community, cause then everything concerning the maintaining is in one place. You can scroll through quickly to see what the discussions are. If you write it all in the main community, then everything would be mixed together. Personal preference

I don't think there are that many communities who would need this - most comms I belong to get along with one to three maintainers. And the mod community names I've seen usually go along the line of [abbreviatedcommname_mods] and wouldn't be desirable to anyone else.
