Typographic markup wouldn't count against character limits in entries or comments.
Full description of the idea
I like to format my entries to use proper typographical symbols-- for example, smart (curly) quotes vs. dumb (straight) quotes, hyphens as opposed to --, etc. This is easy enough to do in my journal, not so much in comments, since the characters required by numeric character references count against my total character limit even though visually they equal out to a single character. If there was some way the server could detect NCRs and not count them against the final character count, that would be great.
Alternatively, if Livejournal auto-converted characters to their proper typographic equivalents--similar to MS Word's auto-replace-- that would be even better. Or, if there was an option you could select that would trigger LJ to perform this check, that might ease any potential server load that would result from users doing it all at once.
An ordered list of benefits
- Allow users of different countries to use more of their unique symbol sets
