CHARACTER
Character's Name: Satou Kuroneko
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Species: Human / "Witch"- This will be explained in the Skills/Abilities section.
Appearance: Standing at a threatening 5'1" with almost no bust or curves to boot it's hard to tell at first glance that Satou is an adult (really). Her personality and "baby face" really don't help her case any. Her appearance is clearly not of an Asian, which makes her Japanese name a bit odd (explained in history), and she looks quite "Foreign", being a Canadian rather than Japanese. Satou's hair is brown and goes to her shoulders, usually with two hot pink ribbons on either side of her head (as seen in
this reference picture). Her eyes are also brown, though when she has cast spells recently or is drowning in Magic debt (explained in powers) they look almost red.
Clothing-wise, Satou will wear anything that's comfortable. She's fond of school uniforms due to her unconscious jealously of girls that attend school regularly and also tends to wear a lot of black, a result of her angsty low self image. She tends to drift to the more gothic side of the fashion world while still slapping loads of pink and hearts on her clothes whenever possible and still respecting the black.
She also has a work uniform, as seen in the above reference, which she is most commonly seen in.
Personality: To fully understand Satou's personality it really helps to know her history. A lot of who she's become and will be in this RP is the result of the scars her history has left her. For example, Satou has a family issue, meaning basically that she likes to assign her friends family roles in her head ("He's like a big brother to me" sort of thing). This is the result of her losing her family and becoming so horribly desperate to recreate those happy days that she tries to build new families out of friends. Her family issues also give her a sister complex- Her adoration of her little sister drives her life. No, seriously. It's important to know that Masume Sakura is Satou's life. If Satou were to think her sister were dead her world would crumble and suicide attempts are very likely unless she finds a reason to believe her sister might come back or something else to cling to.
If you're thinking she's got an incest problem then...well... I can see where that's coming from. But she "love-loves" people differently. In truth, the more Satou likes you the meaner she is to you. The only exception to this rule is Masume and select people (usually girls) that don't seem like they could "handle" a mean friend.
As her Masume-obsession may have suggested Satou is also very clingy. When she decides that she likes someone she'll throw her soul to them. Satou molds her life around people rather than a career dream or quest for money which is both a blessing and a curse. While she's not too materialistic it also makes her a bit annoying once she comes to like you.
But don't worry about being annoyed by her! Satou's not friendly. Okay, so she smiles at everyone, would help anyone who asked, worries about others constantly, and would sooner try to befriend someone with a knife to her throat than stab them (note: If it were Masume, or someone other than herself, being threatened she would go postal) but that doesn't mean she opened her heart to you (cheesy, I know, sorry). Satou has her heart closed off and almost never opens up to anyone. It usually takes a bit of prying. So while she might seem perfectly at ease around you and never yells at you chances are (unless you're Masume) she doesn't think of you as a friend.
But even to friends Satou is a bit closed off. For a portion of her life someone convinced her that bad things happened to people who opened up to by secretly hurting her friends in ways that could seem like Satou's fault, usually using gossip (Satou is very easily persuaded by gossip if it makes her seem bad but rarely convinced if it makes someone else seem bad. Yes, she's naive). So she's become very nervous about telling people if she's hurt, sad, scared, etc. unless they can talk her into it. Some of this reluctance to be open is, admittedly, an issue of pride... Satou is horribly prideful at times. She never admits to her weaknesses and will laugh things off to improve her image. She prefers that people think highly of her and preserves a "Moe Image" when she can to manipulate people.
Back to her friendship issue, you can become her friend if you work at it or if you display "Masumoe qualities", which attract Satou's attention because of her intense fondness of her little sister. Satou is likely to actually pursue your friendship if you're a jerk who is secretly sweet, have bratty tendencies, or can't stand to be wrong... not exactly normal traits to chase but hey, I'll admit that Satou might belong in an a nuthouse.
Satou aims for two images of herself. For one, she wants to be "Japanese". This is further explained in her history, but Satou tries hard to seem sweet, shy, and quiet rather her original loud and hyper self... or at least... she used to. After training herself out of her "Foreigner traits" she adopted the trained personality as her own... Essentially, she's successfully tricked herself into acting according to some Japanese girl stereotypes and they are no longer an act but her actual self (confusing? A bit). However, when she becomes comfortable with someone she will become very cheerful and childish towards them rather than shy and quiet.
She also tries to take advantage of her "moe" appearance, having long ago realized that she isn't growing (though she still wishes for 6 more inches) so tries to use it to her advantage. Usually this is a last resort to get money by batting her eyelashes and telling a sob story... the fact she had "attraction magic" almost mastered helped her cause. By fifteen she'd outgrown this trick and resolved not to take advantage of lolicons anymore but old habits die hard.
Have I mentioned her stubbornness yet? That might be important. Satou is childishly stubborn. She's also got a load of pride and will sometimes drop her shy personality to be confident for a few minutes-- once again, the shyness is only dropped in the company of friends. She's also got a bit of a temper and will solve problems with violence if properly provoked. To people she'd really comfortable with she sometimes becomes a "Type 2 Tsundere", showering those she cares about with supposed hatred while loving on people she actually hates. Confusing? Girls can be that way.
So, what'll you see being posted? Well, Satou is usually very shy, timid, quiet, but worrying constantly. She tries her best and wants the best for everyone and can come off as a bit naive. However, under it all, she's usually thinking cold things and isn't feeling the love vibes she gives off.
If you get her to open up you'll find she's got a violent temper, low self image, and obsession issues, but at the same time she'll protect you with everything she's got and give up anything for your happiness.
If you manage to get her to 100% hate you, which is hard because she believes in infinite chances, you'll get a violent bitch who will try to kill you without feeling any guilty. Just as a warning.
Occasionally she can get a bit angsty and sometimes she has trouble digging herself out of her "oh woe is me" slumps but it's very unlikely she'll ever wail publicly. She'll usually keep it to herself. A friend might sometimes unknowingly yank her out of the emo slump just by being there at the right time.
Lastly, Satou really is an optimist at times. She refuses to give up, going along with her stubbornness, and tries to believe that everything will always be okay. Combined with her stupidity this trait helps her get up no matter how many times she's knocked down... and, occasionally, stick her hand on the frying pan 34322 times and never learn. It also gets her repeatedly backstabbed, usually by the same people.
Random personality quirks: She knows the anime "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha" and idolizes Takamachi Nanoha. Her habit of trying to talk things out and then resorting to violence stems from this.
She also loves to crossdress guys when the can and loves yellow curry. Finally, Satou has adopted the habit of going "auuuu" when she's distressed.
She can have a dirty mouth too. Satou is also afraid of ghosts and a quick learner (when interested).
Skills and Abilities: Almost 90% of her skills and abilities are learned and will be forgotten. Satou is a human who is capable of using magic, therefore being a "Human Witch". Her universe relays on a rather complicated type of magic which can is explained
here. Also note that that page is a rough draft. Satou's a lead villain-to-be in a project I'm slaving on and her world's magic might change slightly when I see the plot holes.
SUMMING IT UP: Magic=Emotions. Emotion is "sewn" into magic. Witches, and some magic devices, are capable of this "sewing".
Magic also has a price system. To discourage witches from being power hungry and abusing their powers they lose something of equal emotional value to any huge spell that they cast. For example, you create a 100$ statue and then 100$ vanishes from your bank account. Or you create a stuffed animal that means the world to you and your wallet vanishes. That sort of thing. Ironically, this system is the result of a corrupt Witch.
Witches also have "titles" (
pretty page). Satou's title ("The Witch of Sin") was given to her to fight the corrupt Witch (Vinita) along with her sister, Masume. The title allows Satou to redirect the "price of magic" to other people. She's supposed to direct it to Masume, whose title ("The Witch of Virtues") negates the price of magic. Using their titles they were intended to organize an army of sorts. This is explained further in history.
With her magic, Satou can cast spells for almost any element she wishes. She is potentially very powerful. Her specialty is healing and the void and wind elements. She's a clutz with fire magic. However, this Satou won't be doing much, if any, spell casting anyways.
Being a witch gives her some slight abilities. Satou is empathetic; she can feel other people's feelings. Please don't worry about me using it because A) Satou herself feels guilty about her power and tries to block it out for the privacy of those around her.
B) She has very little control over it anyways.
C) Even if she did use it I'd get mun permission and she's likely to screw up anyways. She can be clumsy.
Her empathy is a witch-specific ability that helps her sense the stronger emotions to turn into magic. Even without memory I'd like it to haunt her, since it plays a role in her personality. Satou's empathy makes it dangerous for her to be in crowds because she can't control and filter her power. Therefore she usually gets overwhelmed by a million emotions and passes out, which hurts her pride. So she's developed a bit of anti-socialness and is careful about who she interacts with.
Satou also cannot get near recently murdered corpses; when a person dies early all of their emotional potential is released at once and is very overwhelming. She sometimes throws up, as unpleasant as it sounds, when within fifteen feet of a murder. She is also likely to pass out in awkward situations, namely ones where she is being flirted with, because the emotions of love and lust are strong enough to knock her out. Plus she's shy.
If you have any questions about her crazy magic let me know. It really helps me to answer them anyways. >_>; If empathy is pushing it she can have it sealed off.
HISTORY
Satou started magic at age eleven but didn't get particularly good at it until she was twelve. Her cousin and her were selected by a powerful magician named "Fate", who was locked away and only able to slightly influence the world around her, as "game pieces" in what came to be known as "The Game of God". However, neither girl realized how important they had become.
Fate gave them balancing abilities to combat the Magic Government (MASK) and their twisted system of "magic pricing". In this system, every spell had a equal sentimental loss to discourage magicians from getting strong and overpowering the MASK. Satou had the ability to "collect" these prices, these sins, from others and pay them off in other ways. Masume had the ability to automatically pay sin without a single cost to herself. Together, the sisters could be able to act with team mates and never worry about pricing and beat the system.
But let's back up in this mini'novel history for a moment.
When Satou was nine she lived in Canada, but around her ninth birthday her Aunt and Uncle died while working elsewhere as peacemakers. They had set up residence in Japan when not working and their deaths left their daughter, Sakura Masume, as an orphan. The Kuroneko family, Japanese from Satou's father's side, quickly adopted Masume and went to Japan. The thought was that it was too stressful to force a girl who just lost her parents to master another language and move across the world. However, the stress all fell on Satou's head. She fell behind in school, which was already ahead of her Canadian schooling, and didn't fit in because she was foreign. Kids teased her about every little thing she did that wasn't "right". Satou's parents became embarrassed by all the teacher conferences they needed to go through because of Satou. So Satou lost all of her self confidence and struggled to be as "Japanese" as possible, influencing her personality for years to come. All traces of the energetic girl she had once been were covered by the time she was eleven, when she started practicing magic, with a shy girl who actually tried to be stereotyped.
Back to the main stuff.
When Satou was twelve years old, MASK started to try and tear the sisters' bond apart. If they were separated than their abilities were useless; Satou would be collecting sin and suffering, or shoving the suffering on other people, and Masume would only be able to help herself. They started by wiping Satou's parents' memory of her and Masume, causing them to leave the house one day and never return. Satou and Masume realized, with the help of their BFF Ryuu, that they couldn't stay in their old house anymore.
So they left to Europe and spent a few years traveling there. While traveling they learned of "Treasure Cards", which they apparently had, creating the "Treasure Card arc" in their story. Collect all 52 and something great would happen. So they started collecting. What they didn't realize was that the whole thing was set up by Fate to force them to travel and meet people. Fate wanted them to make connections to later make an army to overpower the magic government. But the MASK figured this out and made more "Treasure Cards" (there were originally only 2 and it was a wild goose chase). They took advantage of peoples' greed for power to encourage other magicians to kill the sisters and eliminate the issue of their titles. So on the way they met quite a few other people but most of them died or suffered, usually the work of MASK in an attempt to depress them and break their spirits(though the girls were still oblivious to all this).
When Satou turned thirteen, sometime after New Year's, the sisters were confronted by Witch Hunters. In an attempt to protect her sister Satou decided to be a distraction, allowing Ryuu and Masume to run ahead. She told Masume she would catch up later, not expecting them to be forced miles apart by a cruel twist of fate (AKA, the MASK interfering again). Satou found herself completely alone and wanted nothing more than to be with her precious sister again.
Satou spent the first year after becoming separated from her sister desperately trying to locate her, but by the time Satou turned fourteen she was beginning to lose hope. The MASK saw the potential in her ability and revealed itself to her in its public form, as a helpful Magician Alliance dedicated to helping Magicians deal with the cruelty of magic pricing and use their powers. Satou was shuffled from family to family for the next year, but what Satou didn't realize was that she was sent to families that the MASK wanted to eliminate for various reasons. Her uncontrolled ability to spread sin harmed the families and broke the down so that they were harmless.
Around the time that Satou turned sixteen she realized that her sister and her being separated was on purpose. The MASK promised to always protect the thing that was most important to her [Masume] from harm in exchange for her being vaguely obedient. She continued to live in the families they assigned, unaware of the true reason she was assigned them, and would occasionally go on missions for them. At this point she knew something was up in the MASK but had not fully made the connection.
One family that was particularly important was the Yumeno-Tamura family. Satou lived with them for five monthes, from fifteen to sixteen, as opposed to her usual 3-4 week families. Satou was quickly welcomed by Usao Tamura and her half-brother Shugo Yumeno. They spent a year together and seemed very happy; Shugo even fell in love with Satou and was determined to ask her out. But Usao was secretly jealous and didn't completely like Satou, a fact that would later cause a lot of heartache. Satou loved this family and began to cheer up considerably, regaining some of her lost self confidence and becoming the cheerful girl she'd pretended not to be years before.
Eventually the MASK noted that Satou's affections were drifting to Shugo, ruining the emo slump that had made her so obedient and useful to them. So Shugo was murdered and the MASK pinned the blame on Satou, prompting Usao to go crazy and homicidal. Satou eventually made Usao a cripple after being tormented for half a year and she went away.
When Satou was 16 and a half-ish she got news from the MASK that Masume had died. This was meant to depress her and almost worked. But Satou's personality began doing a 180 around this time; up until the Yumeno-Tamura family she was broken, sad, and missing her sister. But Satou's spirit was recharged by the time Shugo died and she knew the MASK was up to no good. So she refused to believe them for long and began actually piecing things together. By the time she was eighteen Satou had managed to actually contact Fate, get filled in, and was planning to find her sister once and for all and put their titles to use.
Anywho. I'm snagging Satou from this point in her history. She's now seventeen, still separated from Masume, but smartening up. Her personality is a bit brighter and she's less likely to angst.

ROLE
Title: Potential Paradigm Student / Waitress
History: Satou "remembers" living in an upper middle class family of doctors with her adopted sister-cousin Masume for the majority of her childhood. At age 11 her parents vanished, supposedly murdered in the crossfire of the organized crime in the area, leaving Satou to tend to the house on her own. She picked up various jobs when she was twelve, namely delivery services and selling her cooking, to keep the family of two running smoothly. Satou began cutting classes to earn money all in the name of love for her sister, and wanting her sister to live a nice life. But when Satou was thirteen she was separated from her sister; Masume simply failed to return home from school one day.
Since then she's been trying to track down her sister. She practically put her life on hold for a year after the incident. Satou's studies took a back seat and she missed a lot of important stuff in school between the ages thirteen and fourteen. She also spent a lot of money with ads and missing posters regarding her sister so had to retreat to a smaller apartment in more slum-y areas. Satou wants to keep some money saved for when Masume comes back so is currently looking to share her apartment with someone and split the living costs. Plus she's just lonely.
Now 17, Satou is looking into going to school again. But she's fallen really far behind and needs some tutoring. She wants to go to university but realizes she has to get through high school first. Though her life has come off pause she is still looking for her sister. Satou lives alone and works as a waitress between her studies. In the near future she hopes to try to apply for high school again, but only when she feels she's more caught up.
Memories:
- Treasure Card, Queen of Hearts; it turns into her magic wand. Some magic memory might stem from it
- Picture of her family; Obvious?
- Stuffed Bear; Masume loved teddy bears so she might remember some of her sister.
- Notebook of spells; Satou kept some notes on her spells, particularly ones she was making from scratch
- Nanoha Takamachi Figure; She'll remember why she's so violent sometimes
- Shugo's Will; When Shugo died he left a will and had a good portion of his belongings left to Satou. One such thing was...
- Shugo's Lame Love Letter; was left in his will.
- Ryuu-loser's Good Luck Charm; a little gold dragon that Ryuu gave her before she was separated from Masume.
- Cellphone; It has the names of all of her friends. Obviously the numbers won't work here.
SAMPLES
Journal Entry Sample:
She didn't come home today... Masume didn't... she went to school like she usually does this morning. I packed her a lunch and asked her to pick up some groceries when she came home... She's been doing fine with the whole "go to school alone" thing up until now and I was so tired from work last night that I just... I didn't feel up to walking her to school...
... how could I be so stupid? What was I thinking? I'm the worst. Worst worst worst. Of course letting a twelve year old take herself to and from school is dangerous! I'm a failure as a big sister... If I was thinking straight I'd have come to pick her up! I wouldn't have been so lazy!!!
So it's all my fault. My sister is six hours late from when I thought she'd be back... I'm scared. What if she never comes home? What'll I do? If she's lost she might come back eventually...I need to keep the house as long as I can... I need to get more jobs and buy supplies for missing posters... I want to sit here and cry but I can't... If she's not back in an hour... No, two minutes... I'm going to get started.
Masume, hold on. I'm going to find you, okay?
Narrative Sample:
It was raining again.
Satou sighed, pressing her back to the outer wall of the cafe and watching the rain trickle down. There was a tiny sliver of roof above her that caused the rain to waterfall six inches from her nose, and though it did make her the tiniest bit wet as it fell it would be worse to stand out in the direct pouring, right?
"Hmm... I wish I had an umbrella." She mused aloud, staring up at the sky (or what she could see. The blessing/curse of the roof blocked her view). "Maybe..." A man passed by. He had an umbrella... then another man. Him too. Two guys with umbrellas... And then a woman. And a teenage boy... All of them had been smart enough to bring something. They'd listened to the weather report...
Maybe... I'll just ask nicely... I mean, if I accidentally use a spell to make them easier to manipulate it's just an accident and... She frowned and shook her head, banging at her head with her fists. No manipulating people! That was bad! And only to be used in emergencies!
Another man passed with an umbrella.
... I'm missing the next episode of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha...
But not, it was bad. Her conscience was at war with her.
... Masume's probably hungry...
Her morals slipped when her sister came up but she grabbed hold of them again and bit her lip to punish herself for thinking these things. There would be no manipulating! As tempting as it was there would be none!
In the end her morals remained strong and she sighed in relief. The sun peeked from the clouds and the petite girl grinned.
"Nihe~. Good things come to though who don't manipulate!" She sang, stepping out from her hiding place and heading home.
Five minutes later in began to pour again. Satou's conscience was kicked aside and she approached a man with an umbrella up, her eyes watering. "Sir... Can I... Where can I find an umbrella?" She asked pitifully.
She'd punish herself for manipulating people after she was dry. Getting wet had put her in a bad mood.
